That psionic and sun staves are too slow... I prefer the Huntress if I have to take my chances in ranged combat. If we're talking about everything before the journey to the Ancenstors I support all those that consider the Druid as broken: those levels are her 15 minutes of fame.

I found the druid pretty useful, as you can cast a big golem if you hold down the fire button long enough. But you have to be in a safe spot to do it.
Halfling is pretty good with the biggest axe and equipped with some poison arrows.
Melee is far from the quality of Dark Souls indeed. :)
Rangers dominate long range engagements, being able to fire up to the draw distance with their sniper arrows.
Mages do well in mid to high range encounters, their staves add a good amount of versatility.
Fighters do best in close range, but the magic shield allows them to hold their own against the other classes and they can pull out their crossbow, if they have to.
In a multiplayer game, this might lead to a fast, skill based combat, which might be pretty interesting.
