Most useful character?
Melee kinda sucks.

Tough choice! Melee often seems to be one of the more difficult character types to play without the optimal gear, but I've found them to also be one of the best on a level like the first Ark Moor mission. Most of the time I'd recommend either a magic user or archer/assassin as being the most useful or easiest character to get through a mission as. (Can usually keep your distance, although the bow users can also nock multiple arrows for a fast close range kill. Biggest danger are enemy magic classes with the staffs such as Darkness of Despair.)

Actually, in many levels of the light campaign you can wreack havoc with the Halfling equipped with the best Axe+Shield+Armor you have. This is particularly true after you pay visit to that fat silly elf legionnaire-wanna-be. Melee seems to suck the most, but in the end it's quite broken. On the contrary, I thought spellcasters were super but I've found them useless in the last levels.
That psionic and sun staves are too slow... I prefer the Huntress if I have to take my chances in ranged combat. If we're talking about everything before the journey to the Ancenstors I support all those that consider the Druid as broken: those levels are her 15 minutes of fame.

The Halfling or Goblin work pretty well too, especially when using some more powerful weapons that result in regular AOE attacks (when using backwards + attack for instance).

Here's some more information about melee attacks:

Ive Found Hntress/Assassin and Halfling/Goblin the most powerful if you can aim right. More so for the former two.

I found the druid pretty useful, as you can cast a big golem if you hold down the fire button long enough. But you have to be in a safe spot to do it.

Halfling is pretty good with the biggest axe and equipped with some poison arrows.

Melee is far from the quality of Dark Souls indeed. :)

If you know what you're doing melee is actually pretty fun. Coming from the console version to PC it's actaully easier with a mouse and keyboard. It's movement based.

Archer/Assassin are extremely strong. Very few things can survive a fully charged scatter shot.

The classes all have a range they excel at:
Rangers dominate long range engagements, being able to fire up to the draw distance with their sniper arrows.
Mages do well in mid to high range encounters, their staves add a good amount of versatility.
Fighters do best in close range, but the magic shield allows them to hold their own against the other classes and they can pull out their crossbow, if they have to.

In a multiplayer game, this might lead to a fast, skill based combat, which might be pretty interesting.
