include gorky.exe on the windows DEP exclusions
enable comapibility mode for gorky17.exe ;use win95 or w98 compat

that fixed the problem

I'll try that, thank you

For those of us not as fully tech savvy as you obviously are, could you possibly give a step by step on how to do these things? I'd appreciate it since I too am having said issue.

On Windows 7
Click on start (low left circle thing)
Click on Computer
Click on System Properties (upper left - where Edit use to be)
Click on Advanced System Settings (left side)
That should bring up the System Properties box.
Select the Advanced tab (middle one)
You should see Performance, User Profiles, Startup and Recovery
You want the Performance Settings
Bring up the Performance Options box
Then click on the third tab Data Execution Prevention (DEP)
(you need to be in administrator account)
Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select
Add gorky17.exe (you need to know the location of the installed program) (default steam install locations are alittle deeper in a subfolder maze)
Click Apply and OK

The second thing - "enable compatability mode...."
RIGHT mouse click on gorky17.exe
Click on Properties (the bottom option)
Click on the Compatibility tab
Click on the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for"
Select Windows 95 or 98
Click Apply and OK

All i did was translate what that guy said. I have not bought the game and wouldn't buy a game this old on Steam (GOG.com). Unless i got it through a bundle. So i am not sure on the actual file name, since gorky.exe and gorky17.exe were both mentioned. I assumed the gorky17.exe.

Hope that works.
My good samaritan act for the day, done.

Thanks Sam
Still won't run for me. After turning on dep and adding the exception, then running in 95/98 compatability, it starts up and I hear sound for a split second before it locks up. Did this fix work for anyone else, particularly anyone running Vista x64?

I am running Vista x64 and get the exact same problem, sounds like a gun shot or helicopter or something for a second and then freezes. I aswell had tried this little fix, which sucks because this looks like a fun little classic.

Thanks for the long write up, Cidris. I've added games to DEP before, but I always forget the path. Steam really needs a better system for that.
try going into task manager and setting the affinity to one cpu this works for some games, although this game works fine for me except a few minor sound issues

I think no, win7 runs the game on one core automatic, and I had that sound and lagg issues, then I tried run with all core and it works a lot smoother than with one cpu. (For ex.: no sound issues anymore)
