Way to speed up constructing?

How do I put this? Is there a way to speed up gameplay? I mean, I bought this and played for an hour, 15 minutes learning and 45 minutes in a skirmish. Now the ENTIRE 45 minute period accomplished me building 9 buildings and NO army.... and it wasnt my nooblyness, I have workers and paths and the correct materials and all, but god, is there a way to speed up the 1 building per 25 minute rate?

You can press F9 i think or one of F buttons and it will speed up 2x or 4x time.
You can also download Knights and Merchants mod - KAM remake. There is multyplayer, speed 10x, fixed buggs and also 3 new storys to campaing.

Train a shed load of labourers and serfs... but make sure you have enough food being produced that you don't end up with your people starving to death and a huge population drop.

Have many labourers and serfs. That way materials move quicker to destination.
