No Sound (Music or Effects) [FIXED]
I'm playing on Windows 7 64bit ultimate with steam, every other steam and non-steam game plays sound correctly however this game plays literally no sound for me. No music and no effects.

I've tried turning music off and on again, no effect. On a youtube video I saw that the game is supposed to have sound so I figured I'd mention it.

I had no music as well, was able to fix it by starting up Steam in admin mode.

Nope, restarting the game doesnt help. Also, running it directly from the drive (the exe file, rather than from steam's play button) doesn't fix the issue either.

I had this problem. Restarting the game solved it.

After seeing Squirt's comment, I decided to not just restart the game, but to close steam entirely (I never close the steam client, it sits in my system tray). After doing that, the restart of the game restored sound.

Hi, my results still are inconsistent, sometimes restarting steam then restarting the app works, sometimes restarting just the app works.

I AM however able to re-create the no-sound and sound scenarios on the same box, so since I am still experiencing the issue intermitently, I've attached my logs here too.

Prior to that, there was not even a slider in the Windows sound mixer. However, the sound appeared. I ran the game through the Steam client. No computer and Steam reboots. Hm...

The problem here the error message:
AL lib: (EE) MMDevApiOpenPlayback: Device init failed: 0x80004005

There could be multiple reasons this is failing and it does seem to be a fairly common issue when googling that error code. One thing to try is to make sure you don't have a bunch of extra audio devices attached as that may confuse OpenAL as to which one to pick.
Another thing to try is to start the game outside of Steam. Follow these instructions up to step 4: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/32925/rymdkapsel-debug-log.png

Then, quit the Steam client (really quit it, make sure there's no icon in the task bar) and start the game via the Explorer.

Well, I have built-in sound card and usb headphones.Probably this is the problem.

Hi, I quit the steam client completely (no taskbar icon) and I started the game from the console (again) 5 times and am still getting inconsistent results with your recommendations.

No other steam game I have has this problem (I have about 40 or so currently), also I have other non-steam games (see below) with no issues.

This is the result of the 5 times starting using the command line with no steam active:
1 - No audio
2 - Audio Works
3 - Audio Works
4 - No audio
5 - Audio Works

I do not think requiring only one audio device is an acceptable system requirement in this case because even though I only have one speaker set, each of my HDMI ports and digital audio ports (which I'm NOT using) shows up as a device.

On another note, it might not be the driver, it might be how you're consuming it. Apparently minecraft uses the same driver (first result when googling), and I have no problems there with plenty of launches to show for it.

I am absolutely not requiring only one audio device, my dev computer has a whole slew of them. I was merely trying to find a quick fix to the problem so you can play the game without having to wait for me to patch it.
Starting from the command line should not make any difference, it merely lets you see the debug output of the program. Starting with our without Steam also seems to make no difference.
OpenAL is a fairly standard library, so as you say, the issue likely lies in how it's being treated by my game. I'll try to look into what exactly happens at startup, but it's hard without knowing the exact cause. It being this intermittent naturally makes it even harder to pin down.

So, for now, the best I can offer until I find the cause of this is to restart the game until it works. Not very elegant, but at least workable.

Okay! I have a possible fix for this, but since I can't reproduce this locally, it's a bit of a shot in the dark.

But, the branch to pick is now "openal-retry" (not "no-antialias" as it says in the image.)

If that *still* does not fix your issues, I'd be very thankful if you follow the steps to launch from command line I posted earlier with one addition:

After step 6 when you've started cmd.exe enter this command :
set ALSOFT_LOGLEVEL=3

And press Enter, then proceed to launch as per the steps in the image.
This should make OpenAL spit out some more debug info that will hopefully make this easier to fix.
