They stated from the beginning it would have Xinput support only.
You can't launch it in Offline Mode, either. For what it's worth.
But yes, I really need to get PS3 drivers going. The dpad on my 360 controller is actually dying after all the Spelunky I played with it.
edit: magically worked later
And yeah, the game doesn't even start in Offline Mode, which kinda sucks.

Now if only I had bothered to get one of those Dreamcast to USB converters back in the day!
Anyway, at this moment in time, the game only works with devices that work with or emulate 360 controller Windows drivers. The X52 definitely does not.
Keep an eye out and see if they announce some kind of normal gamepad/joystick support in the future.
edit: or grab one of the aforementioned drivers like X360CE and you can make it work
