old support post
Welcome to Renaissance Kingdom Wars, and if you are reading this post I`m guessing you're off to a bad start . Please keep in mind that these bugs only effect less than 2% of our players. But we are fully dedicated to making sure everyone can run the game.

Well lets try to get this resolved for you now shall we. Please check below for various symptoms and solutions.

If this guide doesn't help - please make a new post in this forum, or email support@reverieworld.com

A) Game Crashes on First Run
Please follow these steps, you can check if game starts after each step, in vast majority of cases this fixes the rare startup crash. The most common issue is Step 8 on this list.

1) Restart your PC

2) Temporary set main display resolution to 1080 for the first start of the game

3) Disconnect headset/earphones, and reset Audio settings

4) Temporary disable Anti Virus and Firewall - and if that works set RKW.exe as exception

5) Bring up Task Manager, Go to Processes, and if PnkBstr process is running disable it

6) Download latest C runtime libraries. https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vc_redist.x64.exe

7) Download latest .Net Framework For Desktop - http://www.microsoft.com/net/download

8) Manually set desired resolution in the game file:
  • Navigate to C:/users/YOUR USERNAME/AppData/local/rkw/
  • In that folder, locate and delete file called local_saved_data
  • Edit it with any text editor (right click - open with - Notepad, or any other similar program)
  • Locate <v name="ScreenResolutionX" type="float">3840.000000</v> and <v name="ScreenResolutionY" type="float">2160.000000</v> and set it to the values your Desktop is running.
  • Note: If you can`t find that folder - you will need to enable Show Hidden Files - here`s a guide: https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/4028316/windows-view-hidden-files-and-folders-in-windows-10

B) I played fine, but now it crashes on start-up, or loading campaign
If the game has stopped loading or you get a crash when trying to load your campaign, please follow these steps. This is a very rare issue caused by Steam client not properly updating the game after a patch.

1) Revalidate the game
  • Open Steam find Renaissance Kingdom Wars in the Library
  • Right click on the game name, and go to Game Properties
  • In Game properties click on Local Files, and select Re-validate game files.

2) Delete the Local Saved Data File

B) Game Crashes on First Run
Please follow these steps, you can check if game starts after each step, in vast majority of cases this fixes the rare startup crash.

1) Restart your PC

2) Temporary set main display resolution to 1080 for the first start of the game

3) Disconnect headset/earphones, and reset Audio settings

4) Temporary disable Anti Virus and Firewall - and if that works set RKW.exe as exception

5) Bring up Task Manager, Go to Processes, and if PnkBstr process is running disable it

c) Crashes on opening campaign menu or campaign does not save
There`s this very rare issue effecting some computers that do not have read/write privileges set right. To fix this please follow these steps:

1) if you have more than one account on your PC, try playing from Admin account, or the one with Administrative Windows rights.

2) Set Correct Permissions for Temp Game Files

3) Try setting Administrative Permissions on the game
  • Go to your steam directory ex: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Renaissance Kingdom Wars (This is a typical path)
  • Right click on RKW.exe, and choose Properties

4) Delete your entire RKW user folder
  • Navigate to C:/users/YOUR USERNAME/AppData/local/rkw/
  • Delete most of the contents of that RKW folder, but you might want to leave you campaign saves
  • Note: Do not delete the CampaignX files (i.e. Campaign1002) if you wish to keep you campaign save files

D) That didn`t help? Please let me know
After the crash, please locate your log file and share it with me. I try to reply to all posts within a day or two max.

I have had a specific bug where should I report it? Also a couple of UX improvements from playing.

Best location is our Bug forum right here on Steam, here`s direct link in-case: https://steamcommunity.com/app/2533020/discussions/1/

Just encountered a funny bug. My HRE army was pursuing a French army which ended up near the HRE capitol of Vienna; I attacked the French army and then didn't pay proper attention because the next thing I know I am fighting Vienna -- which I didn't want to do! So I pulled all my troops back for safety, didn't build any food-producing buildings, and let the army run out of food, which it did in just a few minutes. I got the message that my army had run out of resources, and next time bring enough, blah, blah..... and then "Go to the World Map." with a button to click. I must clicked that damned button a dozen times and nothing happened except the camera kept panning up and down. I finally had to CNTL-ALT-DEL to get out of the game.

Never seen this one - any chance you can look up the error in the log file (will be in Log2.txt if you restarted the game), or Log3.txt if you restarted twice e.t.c. You can just open the log file with any text editor and search for "on line" it will only find something if it`s in game error. And with that I`ll be able to fix this right now.

I'm sorry, I can't seem to find the log file. It doesn't stand out when I look at all the files associated with RKW.

This happened to me again a couple of day ago. This time I ran out of food by accident -- not paying proper attention to the food supply and my army was expensive (Musketeers and Feudal Knights). My two farms just didn't produce enough. Anyway, I got notified that I was out of resources, and then the game wouldn't let me exit to the world map.

im using multiple monitors and when launching it goes to all 3 rather then just my main monitor. anyway to get it to cut the bs out without having to disconnect my whole setup.

Really sorry to hear about this - and absolutely lets get this sorted for you. Try starting the game, after it doesn`t start go tot the rkw folder and inside of it you will find a file caleld Log1.txt please open it and copy paste the contents of it here - you can put CODE /CODE around it if it`ll be lots of lines. (Add [ and ] to that code text)

Sorry for the late reply. The issue is the dual monitors, either set second monitor to have same resolution as the first one, or disconnect one of the monitors (this is only temporary for the 1st start of the game).

I disconnected the second monitor, deleted the RKW folder again and restarted the PC. The game still crashes right on start.

This mountain has been known since MKW and Kingdom Wars 4. And yet it hasn't been patched yet.

Again I`m terribly sorry about this - this is not something that we`ve faced before. I`ve tried recreating very similar setup to yours in the office, but still no luck reproducing this. Though I think we are very close to figuring this out.
Please try these steps:

1) Go to the Renaissance Kingdom Wars installation on Steam, inside you will find Options.exe Open it, and then click Save (it should set Ran in Windowed Mode and 4k resolution). And try launching the game like that.

2) If that doesn`t help, set your main monitor resolution to 1080.

Also please feel free to refund the game, I`ll send you a free key. This is such a rare and odd issue, that it`s not fair for you to have to pay for the game.

Disappearing Manors: Lately I've had situations in which my manor disappeared while the city or town was in a battle. This happened with the city of Florence during a siege, and again in the Level-5 town of Padua during a siege. In Padua I actually wanted to build some militia and couldn't.
