Log Piles
Am I misunderstanding or not using these correctly? The way I read it, I should be able to craft and then place a Log Pile, and the Hearthlings will use it as a wood source, probably for 18 stacks. However, I when I craft these, they consume the logs from my inventory sheet and when I place them, Hearthlings do not recognize them as a source of wood. If I run out of loose wood, building ceases. Thanks in advance.

Piles (of logs, stone, clay) are a way of optimizing inventory -- one pile takes the place of many individual elements. But a pile itself will not be seen as a resource.

So piles -- if you want to use what they contain -- must be harvested (use the harvest tool, as if you were selecting a tree to chop down) in order to use their contents.

Ah, I see. In that case, what does the arrow which protrudes out of the pile upon placement indicate?

The arrow indicates the "front" of any placeable item.

I hate to be obtuse, but does the "front" of an object have any functional implications or is itjust a cosmetic orientation? Example, should the "front" of a wall face in or out or does it not really matter?

For chests and larger crafting tables the front is the spot that need to be accessible to your hearthlings to use the items. So if your herbalist can't reach the front of the herbalist table for instance, he won't be able to use it. Some problem I had with chests in the past.

And as far as the piles go it would be great if your hearthlings could harvest just one block at the time from them to use, So like a chest with specific unchangeable filter with also no refilling.

Yeah I agree with the mechanics of the piles working differently than expected. A pile can hold 18 of the same item. A chest or even large crate can hold 64 (32) items and does not require harvesting before using. A chest or crate and a pile take up the same floor space. I really like the idea of the piles, but the current mechanics seems to make them useless next to alternative solutions.
