Hard mode vs normal mode differences
Can someone point out to me what exactly are the differences between normal and hard mode?

When i mouse over the hard mode option, it says: "Face more difficult monsters than normal mode". However when i played hard mode a few hours, it seemed like my workers crafted items at a much slower rate than usual. In addition, the blacksmith also seemed to take ages to level up. Conversely though, my footmen leveled up insanely quick.

Can anyone bring some clarity to this?

It was just an impression. The game adjustes the frequency, size and health(and other attributes like defense) of enemy parties.
The level up does gets faster though, because stronger enemies gives more xp.

You can expect to be hit with a raid atleast once a day vs once every two to three days.

You're going to want to allocate atleast 1/3rd of your town to defense. half is my golden standard, but there are others here that know how to get more out of less w/ some clever positioning.

If you didn't already know this, also keep in mind that crafters get bonus experience per item crafted equal to their Mind score. That's a HUGE deal when you're crafting simple things. Once they get to, say, level 4 or 5, then you only get 1 (base) experience point from the stuff you were making at level 1, meaning that the difference between a 3 and 6 Mind score is almost exactly a doubling in speed to level-up if you're making simple items for exp or money.

Plus of course, if you've switched over to a new job, your exp to level factors in your old job level, so switching a Master Mason to Blacksmith will mean levels come much more slowly than starting a Blacksmith from someone who has only ever been a Worker.

If you're going to play much Hard mode, I'd suggest you rush Cleric. It's very hard to keep up after the first 10-12 game days if you don't have really good healing.
