Game Start Fix
A simple fix to start the game, and allow it to run in the intended 64-bit mode by adding a line of code to the game's LAUNCH OPTIONS.

In the Steam Library game list, right-click Stonehearth game, and choose Properties...
On the General tab page, add a line of code to the LAUNCH OPTIONS:
cmd /c "set OPENSSL_ia32cap=:~0x20000000 && %command%"

For more info, check out this guide:
Game Start Fix

Do not delete the x64 game folder!, if you did that it can be restored by using the Verify Integrity of Game Files action.

Other possible game loading issues that may be encountered:
  • Stays on a Black screen, but the music is playing: press F5 to refresh the User Interface

  • Odd expanded codelike text strings throughout menus, objects: close game, and restart
  • An Engine Error shows up mentioning "GetBounds...": close game, and restart
  • After loading a save, the World seems stuck in Slice mode, and selected objects don't display any text: close game, and reload save
  • After loading a save, the UI buttons don't appear: close game, and reload save
  • Suddenly closes: try a restart again, may take several tries
  • Stays on starting screen with the Radiant logo: close game, and restart

  • Unplug or disable Flight Stick, or some Joystick peripherals

  • All enabled mods didn't activate: close game, exit Steam, restart Steam and game again

hmm, its not seeming to work for me. idk why

It's a fix for Intel 10th gen and later CPU systems, I don't know if it is needed or works for AMD Ryzen CPUs.

Here is another similar guide from another Steam game to give advice on making sure your drivers are up to date as well: Fix 64-bit Launch

Also keep in mind, the game can still stop on startup if using the ACE mod, sometimes. Then it just needs a few more tries until it keeps running.

Also make sure there are no spaces at the beginning and end of the command line

Ace took 4 tries lol and reminder to double check all mods, they must be current with ACE if used

Tech-noob here - I think I was successful in trying the graphics driver update process, and i was able to get the Launch Options code added, removed the newest mods I had added, did the uninstall/install process, changed compatibility settings to 8 & 7, and tried running as administrator.

I can get to the main menu and click "Continue," but during that load screen, the game crashes. A "techie" friend told me how to get to my Event Viewer to see what errors are occuring and this is what came up:

"Faulting application name: Stonehearth.exe, version: 1.1.0.949, time stamp: 0x5c33bcc7
Faulting module name: stonehearthd.dll, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x5c33bc76

Report Id: afb60734-3062-4ff6-98af-fb6c7d7d3c49
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID: "

Aside from the fact that Stonehearth is the application I'm having issues with, I don't actually know what any of it means... heh.. please help? :-x

You can try to load your save again, it may take several tries, especially if using ACE mod as well. I've seen that same crash event in the Event Viewer as well. It either will crash with the stonehearth.dll or ntdll.dll

Is there a way to avoid/fix it so it stops crashing?

I wish there was, I haven't found it yet.
Playing without ACE mod, that particular crash doesn't occur for me - but then you will have much less content and other game fixes. Still, there are many other Mods that can work without ACE as well.

Haven't played in years. I tried playing today (new machine) and it wouldn't even start. I added this command to the start and now at least it's starting. Now I've got other (bigger) issues to resolve in order to play one of my favourite games. Thanks for the help!

Ya, this is just the first step to get the game to be able to start. Its a fragile game, especially with large mods enabled, and you may encounter several other loading issues, unfortunately.

Here are some that may be encountered:
  • Suddenly closes: try a restart again, may take several tries
  • Stays on a Black screen, but the music is playing: press F5 to refresh the User Interface
  • Stays on starting screen with the Radiant logo: close game, and restart
  • Odd expanded codelike text strings throughout menus, objects: close game, and restart
  • After loading a save, the World seems stuck in Slice mode, and selected objects don't display any text: close game, and reload save
  • All enabled mods didn't activate: close game, exit Steam, restart Steam and game again
