It is likely a mod related issue, but a very minor one: some large mods add a lot of extra data that needs to be loaded for the initial boot-up of the game, and the game has a set amount of "loading screen time" in which to load everything. If it hits that deadline and hasn't finished loading, then it cancels the next task (draw the main menu screen) and simply goes back to loading until it's done; however because the game doesn't expect to skip/fail drawing the main menu screen for the first time it never tries again.
What happens in that case is that the game is actually fully loaded and playable; but the computer never went ahead with the "draw the game to the screen" step. The f5 key is simply the shortcut to refresh the game's UI, hitting that tells the game "hey, draw everything to the screen again" and that will get everything working normally.
So, whatever mod it was isn't truly incompatible, just a bit bigger than the game expects. Assuming there are no other issues with it, and the black screen is the only one, then you should be able to use it safely as long as you just refresh the loading screen/main menu when starting.
