You can try pressing F5 to refresh the game, that does sometimes work.

Do you have any old building template mods/downloads from workshop? If you use the ACE mod it can clash and conflict with older files when it updates from time-to-time

I have the black screen of death as well. It's sad because with the ACE mod, this game is amazing.

If it is the normal bug that happens often, it's the ACE mod not liking other mods/downloads. It mainly is with building templates but it happens when there are small patches/updates.

The other issue known to cause the black screen is the files of the actual game downloaded wrong or became slightly corrupted, checking the games file integrity could help solve that. But this one is an old bug that's not been mentioned/happened in a small while

EDIT: So it turns out it works if I uninstall the ACE mod.
Well, I've tried uninstalling all of the mods, uninstalling the game, verifying the files, and it still won't work for me. Any other idea's?

May I ask which way did you get the ACE mod? Through the steam workshop or the online page about it? There may be a way to fix what issue your game has with the mod if you wanted to find a way to play it still.

Normally ACE works well and only has small hiccups that get fixed with it's next small patch within a couple of days of the problem being found but I had to mess with the files a little to get it working for myself when I first downloaded it due to me messing things up when I downloaded it first time myself haha

I got it through the steam workshop. It's worked fine up until now. I tried the solution which involved replacing the .json file, but that did nothing. If you can help, I'd sure appreciate it!

There are 4 different tricks that I've done with the ACE mod that have worked, a main one is simple and sounds like shouldn't make a difference but really it does, is to have the game launched/up itself and go into the mod's tab/page. From there click workshop and download while the game is up and running. The reason it can work is because the game double checks the download due to running in the background helping make sure the files are correct and don't clash with other files.

With this trick try only having the ACE mod only at first, once downloaded through the game, return to the main menu after giving the game a minute to fully read the folder, going back to the main menu normally shows the black screen but should be running smoothly this way since the files are coded better when the game runs while downloading (like with Garry's Mod) and to make sure to use the correct version in the workshop. There are many 'ACE Mods' on steam but many are the wrong files or old ones that don't work well, the main one is normally easy to spot but I've had someone download a old/wrong one before so I'll put a link to the correct one here in case:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1577375188

Once downloaded of course, you can try running a game to just double check then afterwards try checking the 'file integrity' in the steam properties, this way you can see if this doesn't work, why it doesn't, then we can try another trick/idea

If you still have the black screen as well, have you tried the suggestion above? It may work for you as well

I'm glad it worked out! When modding downloading ingame is always a easy fix, even for other games, incase it ever happens again let me know, sometimes the update of the mod can cause a small crash but that has a super easy fix :)
