i wouldn't mind larger maps either though.
Also, just out of curiosity, how big is your city that you need a larger map. Would be interesting to see pictures of nice and big cities, since most people (including me) only build a couple of packed buildings and then give up due to performance degrading/current end game being reached.
Its more of a wanting to explore the entire seed in one game.
Part of the performance problem is imho the abence of a proper FoW, that also reappears. Atm, the moment one of your hearthlings sees a part of an area once they know whats going on there forever.
The same applies to hostile structures - the moment they are there you can see them and their surroundings, meaning that everything near there has to be actively rendered.
if you send them far away, they run back for food/sleep , if they don't run back they die !!!
now lets say they do make it on the other side of the map, then i hope they don't need to pick something up and bring it back to base,, because they would be litteraly on there way for a month
