Sadly, this makes your hearthlings react to other players' hearthlings as though they were monsters -- soldiers will attack things on sight, hearthlings on town alert mode will fight other players' hearthlings, etc. and there's no "toggle" for it, they just do it whenever they get in range of one. You can also loot other players' items, and if you have auto-loot on then things can get messy whenever another player's hearthling drops an item while feeling (or is killed.)
So, while it's possible, you need to plan ahead to make it work properly. The best way to make it work, IMO, is for each player to build up a fort with ironclad doors so you can lock your hearthlings in when you don't want to send them out on raids.
