Township tier 2 buildings
I tend to stay away from building homes and shops for fear of glitches. Instead, I've built a base into a cliff a'la dungeon master. Now I've reached tier 2 buildings and have access to several interesting homes and shops (albeit rather late in the game).

My question is, what reward is there to building homes and shops vs a cave system? It takes up resources and time, while having little to no impact in Hearthlings moods. Plus, cave systems centralize resources and protect them from the elements.

I want to say it is a function of town worth, but that is bypasses easily enough by having enough coins.

Currently, nothing. There are no advantages aside from asthetics.

But, coming in the next Alpha, the team is re-evaluating Hearthling happiness, and one of the things that will affect their morale is personal space. Read about it here: http://www.stonehearth.net/dt-personal-space/

I think that's a great step. I just started a new game in anticipation.
