Known Issues and solutions
Technical issues
All platforms
  • Please update to the latest version of Halfway. Of course, if you play on Steam, you don't have to do anything. If you use the download version from the Humble Store, please check for updates on the store first if you have any technical issues. Updates will also be announced on both our homepage (http://halfwaygame.com) and the Steam community page.
  • Please make sure that your graphics drivers are decently up-to-date. Halfway requires a minimum support of OpenGL 2.1 (or OpenGL 2.0 plus some important vendor-extensions) to run properly.
  • Getting a black screen after starting the game try this: Open the settings.json with a text editor and edit the screen resolution to the one your monitor supports. If this not helping set
"fullscreen": false, and run the game in window mode.

Windows
Issue:
  • You experience a wrong mouse pointer, weird input issues and flickering graphics while playing the game fullscreen on Windows systems.
Solution:
  • This is usually caused by Windows popup notifications such as software updates. You can simply ALT+TAB out of the game, dismiss the popup, and continue playing.

Windows
Issue:
  • The mouse pointer goes crazy after you started the game and gone beyond the main menu. In the main menu it works fine. (This is due to the Windows DPI scaling breaking the libGDX mouse courser.)
Solution:
  • Make a shortcut on your desktop to the halfway.exe
  • Right-Click on it and select "Properties"
  • Select the tab "compatibility"
  • Now set the option: "Deactivate DPI Scaling"
  • Run the game with this short cut.
Note: The menu names are translated from german, as I do not have a english windows, so it could be a bit different named.

Mac OS
Issue:
  • You are prompted to install the Java 1.6 runtime when starting the game on a freshly installed OS X system.
Solutions:
  • This is a false detection of the OS X operating system. Unfortunately, so far we do not have a proper workaround for this issue which integrates nicely with Steam. Please follow the instructions of OS X and install the Java 1.6 runtime provided by Apple. Please note that the game itself always uses a bundled Java runtime (OpenJDK 1.7.0 u45).
Issue:
  • On MacBook (Pro) with both discrete (NVIDIA) and integrated (Intel) graphics chips, rendering can be corrupted on Retina displays when running the game fullscreen with the integrated graphics chip active.
Solutions:
  • Switch to the discrete graphics board,
or in the OSX system settings, change the display resolution to "Best (Retina)",
or switch to windowed mode in the game's option menu.
Issue:
  • Sometimes the mouse pointer disappears after you leave the game and return back to the main menu.
Solutions:
  • CMD+TAB will help if you play in windowed mode,
or sometimes moving the mouse for a couple of seconds makes the cursor reappear again,
or simply use CMD+Q to quit, then restart the game. No progress will be lost at this point.

Linux 32bit/64bit:
Issue:
  • The game starts at fullscreen but the resolution is off, or the icon bar of the OS is visible (Ubuntu). Additionally the options menu is not showing the right resolutions.
Solution:
  • Navigate to the installation folder of Halfway in your Steam folder and open the settings.json. Change the resolution for the game to your native desktop resolution and set fullscreen -> true. Now the game should run as intended in fullscreen.
  • Alternative solution: Go into the option menu and set the game to run in window mode. (if you prefer this)
  • In some cases it helps to Alt-tab out of the game and back into it to remove the icon bar.

I've had an issue with melee attacks occasionally. If my gun is empty, I don't have the option to melee- I have to reload the gun first. It's sporadic at best, but has happened the most with Subject 13. I have no idea how to replicate the bug otherwise.

I've encountered an issue where scrolling up or down does not stop. The screen continues to move north or south and only ends when it hits the edge of the map.
So far it has only occured during the Dr. Schaffer mission.

Murlock, another thread says that is related to pressing Alt at the same time as scrolling. If you change the keybinding to something other than Alt, it goes away.

On my machine (Ubuntu 14.04 x64, NVIDIA) fullscreen is obscured by the Unity desktop interface; alt-tabbing in and out of the game didn't help but caused the game screen to move.

Windows:
Issue:
  • Game doesn't start. Launching the exe manually gives a "msvcp100.dll missing" error.

Solution:

This is actually a very common problem on fresh Windows installations. Many programs assume that the vcredist is installed, but it doesn't ship with Windows or Steam.

The game disables my secondary monitor at each start ... this is highly annoying (System: Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon - open source ATI/AMD drivers - but happens on openSUSE with propr. drivers as well)

On Level 3 - Citizen B Canteen:
I accidentally killed one character in friendly fire (with a granade) which also killed off all the remaining enemies. Then the game automatically stop the fight and move 2 remaining characters to top right corner where a screen with blinking ! was and just hang there. I assume because the game was waiting till the other character which had died to walk to the spot to continue on with the script…

The developer needs to fix this properly. I do not have Java installed on my system for good reason: due to it being a common vector for malware. I regret the purchase and I'm annoyed you did not list this requirement on the store page.

@xenocraf: Yes it is sadly an issue we are looking into, because it only the case with OSX and we do not know yet exactly what it causes. Sorry that this keeps you from playing the game.
Normally you would not need the java installation because we have a java VM packed with the game.
We hope to fix it in a future update.

@j03w: thanks for the report. looking into it.

After loading I'm just getting a black screen. I can hear the menu music, but can't see a thing. No mouse pointer.

@x Lamanski x:
Sorry to hear that you run into trouble running the game.
Can you mail us your system details to "hello (at) robotality dot com" so we can look into it? With no details we can not do much to help. We would need atleast, CPU, GPU, OS, Ram and everything else you might find useful. If you are running on Linux pleaser provide which Distro you are using.
Thanks!

If anyone is having trouble with the black screen error I think I may have found a solution. The game runs in 1280 x 960. For some reason my monitor cannot hack running at that res.

If you go into the setting.json file and change the display width and height to your monitors res and save the next time you load the game up it should show up. Hope this helps!
seminus  [developer] Aug 25, 2014 @ 10:46pm
Thanks @hey_dh for the workaround. Adding it to the known issue/solution now.

Well, my game is randomly crashing during combat, there's no patern other than that, during one of the turns it just freezes for 1~2 seconds and goes to the desktop where it appears that message of an error (and i report it).

It's the second time that it happened but it's annoying since there is no save system and i have to repeat the mission (not that it's too long but it gets boring doing it again).
