In my game Joel is getting blamed for something he didn't do.

Exactly. Unless you shot him in the foot, a shot in the thigh is very much fatal and can kill quicker than a shot in the belly.

Joel was a bad person. Even Tess said it "We're shi**y people". Joel was always the bad guy. To us he was a hero. That's the beauty of it. We idolize the bad guy, what does it make us? the story has emotional and moral complexity unlike any other game. A far cry from your average game. You're supposed to feel conflicted. You're supposed to challenge your worldview. I completely understand why for some that can be really hard.

Games often choose what the canonical ending etc is in a game when doing a follow up. Personally I generally think the better way is to continue the story that allows for the different possibilities but it is very common to decide what the ending your continuing was exactly. In this case Joel kills the Fireflys in his way to save Ellie.

There isn't meant to be a good and bad guy, that is the point. Both stories mirror one another, and show the perspective from different sides. In the world TLOU takes place in essentially every one is a "♥♥♥♥♥♥" person that has done some horrible things. Abby literally takes pleasure in murdering a man, Ellie kills many people including a pregnant lady, the doctor is going to murder a little girl "for the greater good" etc.
