Joel did not even know that was Jerry Anderson. Joel was focusing on save Ellie Williams. nothing else. Why should Ellie sacrifice herself? I would not mind Joel saved Ellie.

Joel didn't need to kill the doctors and support staff. He was just a bit too much of a psycho, and karma caught up to him. Similarly, karma also caught up to Abby as all her friends were murdered by Ellie and Tommy and then she was also tortured, and karma caught up to Ellie by losing everything and everyone she cared about as well.

Although Tommy seems mostly alright, so I guess karma is still impending for him. :)

Where is it shown that Joel felt bad the first time he had to kill? You mean the scene when his newly infected neighbor bashed through his door? I remember Joel getting over that pretty damn quick. Do you really want to compare that to a 4 year buildup and payoff to finally finding the person who murdered your dad? Give me a break. And what about the fact Joel has killed and robbed innocent people, which he admits to when Ellie asks him about the ambush they just went through in Pittsburgh?

A story doesn't need to follow any rule you just make up to be compelling, either.
