Why is Ellie so insufferable? (tv show)

I always heard good things about Ellie, she was worshipped by the playerbase back then in 2014 onwards like literally she was a big star in the videogames world during that time along Sheppard from Mass Effect saga, Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite, Gerald from The Witcher, Kratos from God of War, the new Lara Croft in the tomb raider series reboot etc.

Then i watched the tv show and in season one she was annoying, rude and vulgar, cursing, swearing all the time. I don't mind characters using profanity every now and then but shes way too vulgar in the show and shes so reckless and impulsive in situations where people are supposed to be extremely careful because hello! infected... post-apocalyptic world...

And now with this new season she's beyond hateful, i can imagine people who has never played the game losing interest to try it due such obnoxious, unpleasant character. You literally start feeling bad for Joel and kinda want someone to give Ellie a proper lesson.

Haven't seen a character this insufferable since Cersei Lannister and Arya Stark (post season 6) in game of thrones, Skyler in Breaking Bad, Michael Dawson and Juliet Burke in Lost or Eugene Porter and Lori Grimes in The Walking Dead tv show.

Don't get me wrong i have nothing against the actress, this is the character im talking about, is she just like that in the videogames?

Yes, and she's really pissed off and confused at Joel at the start of the second game, and just not a person who's functioning well or making the best decisions for a lot of it. Ellie is also justified with feeling a lot of what she feels towards Joel.

No. At least in the first game. She acts as a normal teen. She loves joking and doing silly but funny stuff, she's talkative, a little light-hearted and generally a typical 14 year old girl. She swears only when some crap happens (they are attacked by bandits/infected, get trapped, etc) and sometimes to make herself look more grown up, like most kids do. Bella Ramsey is a bad actor. Her Ellie is mostly just a toxic brick face.

It has parallels to Druckman's life experience, but it seems like he's not taking sides, really (in terms of the game). He wasn't pushing a viewpoint, leaving it up to the audience to argue about, which they do.
I see no problems here and it's probably because he took ideas from real life that makes it so compelling.

It's absolutely just subversive Zionist propaganda by design. I think Druckman was so delirious from sniffing his own farts after the success of the first game that he thought he could write a subversive piece of Zionist propaganda disguised as a sequel and that people would just go along with him for the ride.

I think he failed to see the "Leftists" he was trying to court would invariably side with Palestine and no amount of thinly veiled Zionist propaganda is going to change that. However all of the rest of the propaganda in the game aligns with the propaganda the US/Democrats are trying to make synonymous with leftism. All of the racial and gendered tropes are present to such a degree as to be repugnant to any right-leaning individual.

The game is too graphic to be aimed at children so it would appear as if it is aimed at those adults with a penchant toward Gore but are a total social and political blank slate. Which given the polarizing nature of our society and current Day politics I would imagine is an ever-shrinking audience.

I might pick up the original game in the bargain bin or grab it in a bundle. Play it as a stand-alone game self-contained. Like many others I have no intention of flying through its misguided sequel.

Hey, I get where you're coming from with the frustration—especially if the show didn’t resonate with you the way the game did for so many of us. But I think the comparisons you’re making feel a little extreme.

Ellie might be reckless or vulgar at times, but she’s still ultimately someone who cares. In the first game, she literally begs Joel to help people who are being gunned down, and she's constantly trying to connect with others, even through her puns or sarcasm. That’s not really in the same category as Cersei Lannister, who manipulates and murders without remorse. Cersei is a narcissistic sociopath who lets peasants suffer, uses people like tools, and only really cares about her children. That’s evil on a whole other level.

Same with someone like Skyler White—who, by the way, cheated on her husband, smoked while pregnant, and made emotionally reactive decisions with limited info. Ellie, by contrast, is still a kid navigating trauma, survival, and loss. She’s not perfect, but she’s not malicious either. She uses humor and swearing as coping mechanisms, not as weapons.

Also—do people really find cursing that offensive in a post-apocalyptic setting where you’re constantly being hunted or losing people? Like, that’s such a minor thing compared to the themes the story explores. Ellie doesn’t crack jokes during intense moments, but during slower sections—like car rides or downtime. That’s character, not disrespect.

I think it’s fair to say you didn’t connect with her portrayal in the show, but comparing her to characters who are genuinely toxic or evil feels way off the mark.

I will say I personally felt they do lean to far into how brattish she is in the show compared to the game. Ellie from the second game feels like she became an adult, whereas in the show she still seems like a child.
