I'm actually enjoying playing as Abby.
I like the change of pace. The flashbacks give depth to the game, but can be a bit slow and tedious at times. Thoughts.

I thought she was a great character. She catches a lot of flak, but I think the criticism is unfair. Her motivations and physical build make sense within the context. This is actually one of my all-time favorite video game stories, mostly because of how it is told. The way it is told out of order reminds me of Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, in that the jumbled order of events really benefits the story. I don't want to get into too much detail, though, because it sounds like you are still playing it. I don't want to spoil anything. It gets good.

Honestly, people are really harsh to this game, but I think it told a great story. It's not perfect, but the incels and MAGAs really overreacted to the diversity in it. It's diversity feels like slice-of-life, and is pretty tolerable, especially compared to newer games like Concord and Veilguard with really ham-fisted DEI. Try to keep an open mind as you play. That's what I did, and I had a very memorable experience on PS4. I'm thinking about grabbing it on Steam to do another playthrough.
I agrees with OP. Abby is great character. 👍
No she is not, Joel is 100 times better than her.

Does Abby ever mention how she got jacked?

I think I heard her tell Owen that she was lifting weights. I could be mistaken.

It's been a while, but I think the first time you take control of her during her storyline, she has just stood up from a bench press set while use the gym at the barracks. I think it was meant to give the impression that she had been seriously lifting in preparation for Joel.

pretty sure the only time it is said directly is like you said in the Fish Zoo flashback she talks about how much she can lift aka she’s lifting during the time gaps…but when her campaign starts one of the first things you see is a giant gym in the WLF stadium, and I think most people feel that was an intentional nod at the audience referencing her build like a “Hey look, this is where Abby got jacked.” And you can probably infer her desire to be stronger is tied to her revenge plot vs Joel she was honing herself.

No way Abby is waaaay better bro.
I love Abby, she can beat up Ellie with a single punch.

Makes sense, Abby's section of the game is more varied and interesting.

I found the game (on EPIC) to be one of the best single player games I have ever played and I am OLD. I think playing Abby first would have been a good choice up until she killed Joel. I say that because up until then and the way she killed him and other acts, she was messed up but her storyline definitely makes her more humane AFTER she does what she does to Joel. I wanted her dead until her escape to Santa Barbara. I was with Ellie's BFF, let it go, no need to go after a person you will never run into again. Speaking of, where did the BFF and her baby go?

FTR, I usually stay far away from zombie games but this one was done right.

This was their biggest mistake, and probably the reason so many players couldn’t connect with her at that point. They really botched that part. By the time you start playing as her, you already know most of the people around her are dead. It feels more like a massive flashback than anything else. That makes it hard to care about their fate, especially when some of them aren’t exactly likable (like the guy who’s basically a total ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥).

They should’ve made us care about her and her friends before all of that. And her character needed more depth. Playing fetch with a dog and a flashback with her dad did nothing to help, at least imho.

Except they do have main characters, and the story is intentionally crafted to play with the player’s emotions. That’s what makes the narrative feel relatable, or at least it should. It’s not meant to be just another mindless zombie game. That’s also why they adapted it into a TV show.

Maybe you’re confusing “main character” with “hero”. Not all stories have traditional heroes, and The Walking Dead already explored that kind of narrative a while ago.
