Shader compiling preventing from playing
Ive seen others have this issue but honestly this is getting ridiculous, every time i enter a slightly new area or a cutscene the shaders are compiling and the game slows to 1fps, this wouldnt entirely be a problem if the audio didnt continue to play, ive had several cutscenes play out via audio while the game is at a straight freeze or 1fps slideshow because its compiling, is there ANY solution here because ive never played the 2nd last of us before and i really dont want to ruin my first play with these freezes. this is really ruining it for me

Don’t like this either. I guess Nixxes wanted to avoid the long shader compile time that Part 1 required. But I’d rather wait an hour or so until the shaders compile than have stutters.

While Part 1 had questionable performance and stability, I never noticed shader compilation stutter as I had waited for them all to be compiled. Same for the Uncharted 4 collection.

Nixxes should add an option in the menu to make it compile all shaders.

Exactly! id rather just have a big loading time or something once, at this point the entire story wont be playable because i have to keep waiting between scenes and this whole story is gonna be ruined. so im understanding that this is by design and theres no fix to this?

Maybe we should send the feedback to Nixxes and Naughty Dog. At least then they might explore the possibility.

Perhaps it’s not possible to pre-compile ALL shaders, especially with the randomized “No Return” mode, but most of the main story and “Lost Levels” should be able to use pre-compiled shaders.

+1 Having option would be the best. Like youi I prefer to wait 30min or more one time than this issue at every new zone

Definitely. I’ve got an older CPU (as old as the PS4), so background shader compilation will have a devastating performance impact. I understand it’s unsupported, but I know my CPU would much rather just run the game, than have to do that AND compile shaders at the same time. So it’s better to do this ahead of time where possible.

Even high-end PCs are having significant performance drops during background shader compilation. Maybe I’m talking nonsense though, I don’t know much about thread scheduling or prioritization. Other than “more hardware threads is always better”.

All they need to do is have shaders compile on main menu, but also let you start the game how it is now as well.
I had some horrible immersion breaking long pauses when walking around seattle for the first time, including one where the game just stopped for about 10 seconds before letting me into the bank location, with a "please wait" message on the screen. Now that that's over with, the game is running at 100-120FPS. It's frustrating.

Exactly. i always knew what would happen to joel but when i had seen the scene for the first time, it was frozen at the beginning, the audio played for about 20 seconds without the screen moving and after that it wasnt synced properly. it seriously ruined my first play through experience

Do you mean those horrible random “Please Wait…” screens from Part 1?

This was fixed in one of the patches for Part 1. Please don’t tell me they’ve re-introduced these 😫

I never had one of those in Part 1, but i had refused to buy it till it was in better shape.

But yes, In this game, when i got to the ruined bank location in Seattle, i had the game just freeze into a static loading screen with that animated "please wait" message in the centre of the screen for about 10 seconds or a little longer. I also had large pauses of about a second each while moving around the open Seattle area too. Out of interest, i restarted the chapter after mostly exploring it, and i had a flawless 100-120FPS experience, with no hints of stutter. The system they've designed for the shaders isn't sufficient for a good game experience.

If you're reading Nixxes, please implement additional shader compilation on the main menu, so we can choose to do it that way if we wish.

I'm assuming you tried lowering the game settings and maybe using mods that reduce things like VRAM requirements or claim to "optimize" the game?

No mods for me. I have a 3090 with 24GB of VRAM, so it's not a VRAM issue. I'm using Digital Foundry's optimised settings (also with my experience of the settings for the first game). The game mostly runs at 120FPS for me, just with big pauses for the whole time when first exploring the open area of Seattle. If i could compile the shaders on the main menu, everything would actually be perfect for me.

lowest I get with my 5900X + 9070XT setup is like 55 fps for a split second, otherwise getting like 90 to 180 FPS depending on area. I also noticed the game uses a ton of virtual memory. I have 32GB of RAM and set my VMem to 64GB and it still uses a lot of it.

My setup is Intel I9 9900K, 16GB of pretty fast RAM (4133mhz), and the 3090 with its huge amount of VRAM. I run the game with no other apps open at all, so the game has the maximum amount of my RAM available. The game is installed on a Samsung NVMe M.2 drive too, so there's no severe bottlenecks, as evidenced by the great general performance of the game. It's just the periods of shader pre-comp that's holding it back, and Nixxes have the option to give us Main Menu compilation to fix that.

now I'm curious because 16GB isn't enough for modern gaming. Try setting your virtual memory to like 64GB on the NVME drive
