That bit is dumb to the point of cringe, but the rest of the narrative's shortcomings have less to do with 'cringe' and more to do with hypocrisy, triteness, and smugness.
That said, still an impressive game and worth playing for reasons other than the story themes. It's just weird the series degraded so starkly on that front, but it still plays well and has incredibly production values.
If you're a well adjusted human being, it's great.
Right off the bat, Abby travels 900 miles through all manner of nasties on the chance that a guy shes looking for might be in the state. Then, she has an argument with Owen over how they are going to get him to talk, and tell them where Joel is. Like, this isnt something they would have discussed BEFORE travelling 900 miles through the nightmare world of the last of us.
This leads Abby to run off in a huff, get lost in a snow storm, run into a horde of fungus zombies, and then get chased. And right when shes about to die, she is saved by not only the very guy that shes looking for, but also the guy she was hoping he would lead her too.
Then, the two guys who have lived in the area for 5 years + are lost, but Abby, who has been in the area for about 2 hours, knows exactly how to get back to her camp.
And then when they offer up their names to this group of strangers, they dont react at all when theres a MASSIVE tonal shift in the room to the sound of their names. And Joel gets shot in the leg, because hes too busy making ♥♥♥♥♥♥ jokes.
The whole game is as about as contrived as a piece of fiction get be. And theres a lot of "and then this happens" instead of "this happens, because that happened". ITs just dishonest writing from start to finish.
And yes, Joel was killed not to make the story happen, but because Neil Druckman is a culture war moron who hated that Joel was liked so much, and wanted to get rid of him. And at the same time, wanted to put all his failed ideas from the first game that were rejected by his bosses into the 2nd game now that they were gone and he was in charge.
Theres far too much focus on all the culture war nonsense in the game. Like, youre struggling to survive in a world thats trying to eat you, rape you, groom you, kill you, and many more things. But you still have time to sit around and think about your gender identity... There nothing wrong with being LGBT, but this was the wrong game to introduce the stuff. Its so forced and cringe, and because of its inclusion, you cant have an honest conversation about how horrible the story and characters really are.
And if nothing else, youre going to wear out your triangle button playing this game. Its criminal how simple the game play is.
