Doesn't mean you roll over and giveup.
But I'm sure that if Ellie would have been told what was going to happen she would have agreed to the surgery, and Joel wouldn't have had an excuse for taking her with him. If he would've done that even after she said she was OK with dying for the cure, he would have become an irredeemable villain. But since he was forced to make the hardest choice of his life in just a single minute, we can relate to him, we can understand where his actions came from. Explaining something and justifying it, are not the same though...
However one of the big themes of The Last Of Us Series is grey morality.
The fact you you titled the post the way you did means you missed that point.
Referencing a convo between Druckmann and his dad, the question of 'prisoner exchange' came up.
1. Druckmann asked whether what his dad thought about prisoner exchanges.
2. His dad replied:
- he would not release PLO prisoners even if it was to free israeli soldiers.
- but he added that a father would see it differently, if that israeli soldier was his own son.
Hence the basis of TLoU1.
Good story, but Druckmann is still a creep tho'.
His original prototype of TLoU1 was called 'Mankind'. 'Man' being the operative word.
Only/All women were infected. ONLY ELLIE - a minor - remained uninfected.
So you hand a planet of lawless men going after Ellie (a minor) because she was the only 'reproductive' female. Amy Hennig - true mvp, also of "Uncharted" - talked Druckmann down.
There's some dark sht swimming under the surface.
