Is the game any good?
So I played the first game and loved it (even bought a PS3 at the time just to play it). Waited 10 years for the PC version, played it. Never played part 2 because I don't have a console at this point. Is the game any good? It has a 93 on metacritic from critics but only a 5.8 from players.. I'm wondering if I'll be disappointed since I liked the first one so much but it did end on a cliffhanger that is still bothering me to this day

The problem with post-apocalyptic games is that they will ALWAYS leave on a cliffhanger. There is really no way around it. Now does this game leave a cliffhanger as gut wrenching as part I? I don't think so. I think they left it the only way a post-apocalyptic story of a singular particular character can that doesn't make the player hate life. Now don't get me wrong, they definitely left it open to create another chapter. That's the beauty of these story-lines; though it starts with one character that we follow, the overall plot can continue and go on across many parts and characters.

Bottom line though to answer your question definitively. This game is great! You should play it. There are some new mechanics incorporated with the old mechanics. They follow the story-line pretty well. Some awesome graphic and brutal scenes along with their token beauty of landscapes.

As far as story content, they do go a little further with the LGBTQ as well as buffing up characters. HOWEVER... it doesn't take away from the overall gameplay, furthermore it is incorporated in a way that is realistic and plausible with each character's backstory. LGBTQ incorporated in stories does not bother me. Over-saturation does. Over saturation of anything gets overbearing. Much like hearing the same song on the radio every 10 minutes. Gets annoying.
So far it is not dripping, and they have done well to balance as best they can. but would like to see more traditional story lines incorporated as well. So that alienation doesn't happen to non members of the LGBTQ community.

Did the game leave me with more to be desired... always. but that is the nature of developing games and telling a story, you can't please everyone and cover every last detail to give everyone everything that they want or think should happen.
The game is still fantastically great and beautiful! It gives me hope for naughty dog to continue with a solid Part III.
I like your view on story. There are really some fragments on LGBTQ+ that perhaps are telling you why. And it great.

Every unadequate man would tell "its dei woke" - no it isn't.

What really makes me laugh is that how much attention they pay not to the story whatsoever but to LGBTQ+ in that story just to lower the game scores.

What is also disappointing is that those "critics" don't have the game and aren't even playing it just because "it's DEI woke" over and over again. You can basiclly skip everyone who's here commenting something because he doesn't even own the game. It's appearance on Steam gives those homeless DEI woke critics ruin the overall thought about the game.
"Bigot sandwich" part was no less than eye rolling. It was like, we know, we know you like to preach about this stuff, but can for the love of every fungus zombie leave it out of the games?

Depends on what you are after.

Gameplay and graphics are basically like the first but more refined. Has some good moments.

Story meanwhile is more of a cliché ridden revenge romp that relies more on shock value and misery porn over actual substance
Game is amazing, everything gameplay wise from the first is done way better and more visceral. The story is more mature and dark with plenty of shocking moments, too shocking for the simple folks who many just wanted a literal clone of the first game. Level design is awesome, if you are willing to absorb yourself into the world and story, the gameplay will hook you and you'll be in for a hell of a ride.

Most of the hate came from trolls on the right wing who will literally attack anything that hurts their sensitive feelings when it comes to politics, see any major movie/game release in the last 10 years or so. Who had a very easy time thrashing this game as it met so many things on their check list and the fact many normal non political fans were so upset about the story they were willing to side with right wing loons just to have someone give the illusion they were validated in their hatred of the direction of the story. Imagine throwing such a fit about the story you are willing to lock arms with hateful trolls who dwell in their mother's basements, almost respect the political loons more because at least their is a rational to their actions, random gamers were literally just being babies.

It became impossible to have a meaningful conversation around it in either direction, because if you liked the game or you hated the game you were accused of trolling and pretending by the fans/haters alike. Was always easy to detect the trolls tho, even tho it was useless as they were such lamers they were just constantly making new accounts, most trolls could only repeat the same talking points over and over, and refused to acknowledge any proof that made their points null because in truth most of them didn't actually care about this game, they just wanted to spread hatred and attack something they felt promoted the opposite of what they believed in.

One of the easiest ways to catch them were the ones that would argue it was impossible for abby to be the size that she was in the apocalypse clearly showing they never bothered to play the actual game because the game clearly shows the headquarters abby lives at as part of a literal army has a state of the art gym, a football field full of livestock and gardens, access to all the best medicine they could raid from hospitals which would include supplements aka roids. Abby had plenty of food and equipment to maintain her size with the aid of some sort of roids which was obviously and pretty much used in all body building, which most of the haters don't realize since most of them's idea of weight lifting is lifting their hot pockets into their mouths. Abby literally spent near 24/7 in the gym making her body insane because of her emotional damage of feeling like a helpless little girl after the death of her father. Inside she was still that hurt little girl, so she turned her body into a literal fortress,

Other fun things like the fact abby is actually a much better written character than ellie is, but people have a bias towards ellie because she came first, it's not that she is even written bad, people get confused and think the story breaks down into something simple like revenge is bad, but that is literally a small aspect of the story, the story is about trauma and how we deal with that trauma. Untreated trauma can turn the best of people into monsters. When it is all said in done is is easy to argue ellie was the much bigger monster, not because she has an evil heart, but because the trauma she experienced warped her at such a profound level, much like how abby was also warped by hers, hurt people hurt people. People act like what happened to joel was done purely for shock value or a middle finger to the fan base or what ever immature take they have on the situation, no it was done so they could tell a really depressing story.

I am all for characters dying if it means the story is going to be good, too many shows/games are afraid of their own fans and keep all their popular characters alive out of fear of backlash and then the story becomes watered down because none of the situations matter because through some bs logic the heroes will always make it out fine. How much more exciting was walking dead/game of thrones when you truly felt anyone could die at any time vs the later seasons, where people would never die or when they did die, they had over the top you can see it coming a mile away boring heroic death as opposed to the sudden visceral oh ♥♥♥♥ that person just died reaction many of the earlier deaths had.

Anyway I expect even this post to get attacked, trolls live for this ♥♥♥♥. However if you enjoyed the first game at all and are not bothered when stories take actual chances to tell a new story instead of retelling the exact same story with a fresh coat of paint then I think you will love this game. Like I said even ignoring the story, from a pure gameplay level if you enjoyed the style of the first game, this is that game, but with every aspect done 100x better, the ai, the sneaking, the killing, the exploring ect, blows the socks off the first game and the first game was great, which should tell you had awesome this game really is.
