Tales of Arise was beyond trash. The only thing that carried Arise was A) the visual improvements and B) Kisaras Ass. That thing was beyond beautiful.
Arise had Sponge enemies, not a single dungeon gimmick and everything could be skipped with a lot of CR or whatever the thing was called to destroy barriers, the story is beyond shallow with the: "OHH I HAVE TO FORGIVE EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE" and 99% of the skits are trash as well. They all are the same with the typical:
Shionne: *SIGH*
*nobody reacts*
Shionne: *BIGGER_SIGH*
Group: "Hey, whats up Shionne?"
Shionne: "It's none of your business"
THEN WHY DO YOU OPEN YOUR MOUTH!? The final dungeon is just a mini boss rush and higher difficulty only leads to enemies having more HP. Enemy variety? Non-existent. You have 20 enemies in total and they only change color patterns throughout the areas.
Oh and the best thing: It recieved an expansion that expanded NOTHING. NOT A SINGLE NEW AREA!!! Have you ever heard of an expansion that expands nothing? You get two new dungeons, much wow lol
Tales of Arise was beyond trash so saying that this abomination was better than Graces F? Yeah.. I think your taste is flawed.
Symphonia had better dungeon gimmicks, but both stories (Collete and journey of salvation and her love for Lloyd or Cheria and Asbels weird relationship) are quite identical in terms of cliché.
Does it have the best story? No. Does it have good gameplay? Yeah. You can play around with a lot of things. I also like the story. The only thing I disliked is that bosses receive super armor sometimes and destroy your combo and the difficulty spike of some bosses is weird. Everything else was fine.
TL;DR: Tales of Arise deserves a place in the trash bin
It had 7 more years to get better stuff so comparing later entries to previous entries is... kind of weird to begin with.
I love the game, the story and the gameplay and it gave me a beautiful time.
But if you didn't like it thats fine. Everyone's taste is different, hence why I personally love Tales of Symphonia - its my all time favorite. Nothing beats it, but objectively... a lot of entries beat it lol.
Not in my pink world though, I love Symphonia to death. Thats how different taste works and without different people like you we would only have the same thing so its all good :)
Sometimes you hit stuff and sometimes you get misses. Thats what life is all about
Narratively, I agree with you.
Gameplay, I don't.
Narratively the game is extremely "video gamey" by which I mean everyone's relationships, area availability and plot progression is entirely "we need this area to be this or that character to feel this because reasons". So even though I like some of the things the game sets up or some of the character relationships...you can see how flimsy it all is. Case in point: at the beginning of the game you form a friendship pact with a character and it's played as a really meaningful moment. Not long after the time skip happens and apparently at no point in those seven years did either character try to talk to each other...despite being in the same city. All so you could have a big reunion moment the story demanded. Or how about how the story has a moment where an important lord bans you from talking to the sovereign and wants to put you in prison for disagreeing, and then he helps lead an attack on a town you try to defend. Only, the next time you can talk to this guy he's totally happy to see you and says something like "good timing, I need help with this quest". Like buddy what? We were just on opposite sides of a civil war?!?
Gameplay speaks for itself. I'm not sold on it being "best in the series" but it's quite enjoyable with some decent challenge that rewards some skill expression. Definitely a stronger entry in the series from the games I've played.
My reasoning is that the games aforementioned punished players for playing defensively and often had major faults either with the combat or general mechanics. ESPECIALLY ARISE WITH THEIR DAMAGE CHECK BOSSES.. The bosses in this game give CLEAR indication when their guard is broken, when they have super armor, and the game rewards you for playing to your own specific playstyle, be it offensive of defensive.
It's only popular because most people don't know how good the previous games are.
Party members start becoming more and more one-note, and skits start becoming more and more of "oh hey, party member, what do you think about the most recent story scene?" which they respond to in their one-note way. There is less of what could be called character interaction, and more like they were just bots giving pre-set responses.
In fact, the last 3~ areas/dungeons of Arise are absolutely bloated with skits of that above nature. "Party Member, what do you think about the recent story scene?" being repeated with each member, it was funny how repeated it is originally, and then it keeps being repeated and loses the comedic value... and keeps being repeated, more and more and...
Tales series character interaction and banter is usually a strong point (or at least, not a negative), but Arise is likely the weakest of the games in a looooong time... I think Arise might be the first game in the series (that I know of anyway) where I could safely skip a meaningful % of skits, due to already knowing exactly what they'll be about, because there is seemingly no effort in having the cast talk about anything other than the most recent events.
Saying Arise is trash but his favorite is Symphonia. LMAO Nostalgia really blind peoples so much and reduce their IQ to room temperature as well.
No its called different taste. Even after all these years Symphonia had beautiful and diverse dungeon gimmicks with the Mana Ring.
You can say and insult me however you want, but that is not purely driven by Nostalgia. Instead of insulting other people over different opinions on the Steam forum I would recommend to pull some metal and do something for yourself instead of wasting your time playing keyboard warrior online.
For me, I never understood the hype for Tales of Berseria, I found everything about it unappealing, so things like combat, world design, dungeons, story and characters.
I wonder why all of us agree on Vesperia though. What is it about this entry that everyone agrees on? Never met anyone who thinks Vesperia is not a Top 3 Tales game at least.
Yo it's me. I'm one of those people. Though I think what makes Vesperia so good for most people is the cast. Really like that cast, and I personally think Yuri is maybe the best protagonist in any Tales game, very refreshing to have a character that feels like he has a lot of agency and the plot isn't just "happening" to...not to mention it's nice to play as a mentor instead of a mentee. Lots of these games put you in the shoes of the young know-nothing, but Yuri's his own man and is very clearly the leader.
I don't care for Vesperia's combat though. I find it awkward, clunky, and takes nearly a full playthrough to eventually become good. I think Graces is far superior and everything they tried, and failed, to do in Vesperia they succeeded with in Graces. But I get that's not the majority opinion.
