Is it intentional that the worms are THAT overpowered?

Well I finished the first boss and was in the second track after a couple battles in a tent that I had selected, when I took the left path for gold since I had enough from the other stuff (had three paths to choose from and ended up in a battle against 4 worms that would had dropped one chest each after they were defeated.
After I killed one of them, two of the burrowed themselves and I got a message to split my team. Even I had some of my people outside of their range, they still managed to reach them and one hit kill them. I thought they only took damage since the damage wasn't THAT hight that it would be a one hit kill but they just dissappeared from the map as if the worms had eaten them.
In the first try they killed 4 of my people, in the second try only 3 cause even I had them a part, the worms covered more ground then usual in their impact.

Since they after that kept recovering for 35hp each, it was impossible to defeat them with two people and the third worm alive helped them of course to take me out.
Since I didn't want to waste any more of my time trying over and over I just gave in (it was a option) and ended up in a cutscecne in which my whole team is dead and sable appeared so everyone meet her.

Not sure if it was intentional that the worms were unbeatable to I can be thrown into this cutscene or not so I'm wondering if that's the case OR if the worms really need tweaking because they are overpowered like hell.

The best way to deal with that is dispelling the prey mark on the targeted character. Then the worm will attack normally instead and your characters wont be eaten.
But I still agree that they are a bit too hard to deal with.

Your first impression was actually right, the worms dont kill imediatly but eat your characters alive. The swallowed character will take a little damage every turn, but killing the worm will free them again.
Btw. Killing the first boss on the first run before meeting sable is pretty impressive
