It's easier if you chain several barrel rolls in the same direction. And also, try to not be too much focused in doing the barrel rolls. It's best to focus on your game, not crashing, and when you think it's safe, do two or three barrel rolls.

PD: of course, you don't have to do the 20 barrel rolls "in a row" meaning one after another, you can take all the time you want, also between several regions :)

you can also ignore the sparrow between regions and get in quite a few of them before the next region start

It's not in a row, it's in a run.
Just spread them out through each region, and nail as many between regions as you can get.

Later they ask you to do X barrel rolls in one region. That sucks.

I got it from getting launched via wacky physics. I bounced off a wall in region 1 as I activated a jump powerup, and didn't come down until halfway through region 2.
A lot of these 'challenges' are rather ridiculous, with many of them made easier by stuff that is unlocked later in the levelling. The only move right/left through multiple regions is nigh impossible without jump, and made infinitely easier via shield.

Got it from the first level. Just veered left constantly and rolled right every few seconds. Also rolled repeatedly at the end of the level and before the geography of the next one started.
