Where are the save files located?

I've finished the game twice with all the achievements unlocked
and I want to keep my save files since there's no cloud back-up.

The saves are in the %appdata%\frogwares\<localized game title>\save folder. Just put %appdata%\frogwares to the search field in Start menu, press Enter and browse opened folder for the rest.

I don't think the picture is the save file, it is just a thumbnail of where you are in the game.

No, it's a save file. Open it in a notepad and you'll see the profile data at the bottom.
