So can you start in a small ship and buy bigger ones?

I am an old grognard and really like the sense of progression. So I was just wondering if there are shipyards where new ships can be bought..

Only way to change your ship during a playthrough is to steal it by boarding an enemy ship, removing the claim, and killing the crew. Unless you use some cheat/console magic. You can steal boss ships if you can board them.

Okay but I think I saw that it would not be your main ship even so but an extra one. Correct? And you can only do certain things with your main ship

Boss ships can be claimed as your own. You can only own and keep one ship at a time, so you'd effectively be leaving your old one when you leave.

Also there's not a huge discrepancy in size between ships. Like the Roland is larger than other ships, but it's not like in other games where there's clear tiers of ship sizes. The ships just fill different roles, and there's not really better versions of them out there outside of some of the boss ships.
