It supposed to make it so that when you die then your save is deleted providing a sort of "You only live once" type of experience.

Similar to the Dead-Is-Dead mode in X3: Albion Prelude (except ships, credits and resources don't disappear because the game feels it should talk to Steam every second and synch problems occur...sry, venting ;-) ).

similar to FTL too, mistakes are deadly. Increase 300% roleplaying style and coop tho.

Ironman mode is permadeath, to prevent save-scumming ( saving and reloading to an earlier point ).

It's a mode for the top 1% basically.
