Probe Research points
I've been looking all over the internet to find out where to shoot probes at asteroids, rocks, etc. Nothing has been able to explain "where" exactly does the scientist actually shoot to gain exp/research points. Any pointers?

You'll occasionally see light blue particle affects on asteroids and other objects. Those are the probe research points you're looking for. They do not spawn in graveyards or asteroid fields (the fields with tons of asteroids), and you'll find at most 3 in a sector.

I'm sorry, would you happen to have some sort of screenshot or something describing this? I have my graphics on max, the rest of my crew has also been looking as well and we never see any graphical effects that show any probe points. Anything blue we've seen is scrap to be collected, but our scientist would shoot and get points/research at random, not by aiming at any specific place.

Here's a screenshot.

These screenshots don't do it much justice, it can be hard to spot sometimes, but other times it's easier as the particles move around slowly. Oftentimes shooting probes at a random object on an asteroid will fly near enough to capture the research, but it's not a surefire way to get the stuff.

Thank you so much for this information. It's crazy how this isn't documented somewhere!

Thanks again :D

It is documented in the Academy in-game tutorial. You can see this in the training area for scientists at the sensor dish. There is the task to shoot probes at the blue glimmer. There you can see it in action. The academy is clunky, but it does contain most of the important info.
