Piloting questions?
New to the game, going to pilot for my friends. I play a lot of Elite Dangerous and I have not been able to figure out if this game allows for vertical and horizontal thrust, like strafing left and right or up and down without actually moving forwards or rotating. I don't see keybinds for it in the piloting controls menu. Do these controls exist? Do I have to upgrade the ship to unlock them somehow? Am I just aboslutely stupid and can't figure it out?

You have to enable the manual mode, otherwise it's on automatic which is simply aim=where you go, while manual control rotation and side thrusters individually

The first thing I did was disable Automatic mode. However WASD controls only rotate the ship, and the only thrust available is backwards and forwards. I am looking for thrust, actual movement in other directions like side to side while the ship is pointing forwards. Most space flight games allow for more control than this and I am just wondering if it is here or not.

You can strafe, i'm sure of that, i don't remember what's the controls tough

I just spent an hour trying stuff on my own. I got it. There is a keybind called Maneuver Mode and when you hold that button the WASD changes to strafe. Not intuitive, but better than nothing. If devs read this by chance, please make it possible to have those strafes bound to buttons so they can be used with simultaneously with rotation.

I like how it is, in my case I only have to hold right click to use strafe, and you shouldn't be in a situation where you would need to strafe and rotate, if there were other keys, you'd either need to do finger twister or have a hand off the mouse.

I'm not saying change how it is. It just needs more options. I play elite dangerous with oculus rift and X-55 flightstick and the controls in this game pale by comparison. The whole allure of flying a ship in zero-gravity is based on full 3-axis freedom of movement.

There is enormous potential for improvement here and it doesn't even have to step on anyone's toes if they like the current setup.

Sources: Elite Dangerous. Eve: Valkyrie. Star Citizen. Extroardinary spaceflight games that should light the way for newer devs.

Piloting won't ever allow you to dodge anything effectively either way.
