Yeah I never got their names down, I just sorta went by color. It almost seems a better strategy to save them up and start researching when you have 4 pages of research options.
Because you will need the buff of the talents to progress smoothly in the game. It makes more sense to know which researches are useful and go for them as early as possible.
Also it makes sense to see that you research talents for those members who have points to spare.
As a rule of thumb get those two researches first:
Scanner mode: item pickup (one purple)
Auxiliary Power (3 blue, 2 white)
Also useful are:
Reaction time for pilot, armored skin cells for weapons, gun cooling for weapons, all engineering talents that increase reactor performance, probe xp boost (dunno the name) for scientist (to level up quicker), talents for weapon specialist which increase turret performance, stamina boost and the talent for captains that gives the crew more armor.
Like I said, check who has talent points to spare. Makes no sense to research all the engineer talents and engineer has not enough points to skill them all.
Also: You can buy research materials at the Burrow. But it is expensive.
