The game also has a bunch of games within games so it's really a culmination of ideas.
Another horror game I really enjoyed for it's atmosphere and storytelling was Fear the Spotlight which is centered around a High School Tragedy based around the Phantom of the Opera. Not Stylized 3D but more along the lines of Retro PSX graphics but I felt they were superb. Great attention to art direction.
Among atmospheric horrors I think Signalis is still the best. Immaculate Atmosphere and interesting world.
I'd also give AIHASTO's Wire Lips a try. Really enjoyed that one too.
This game was recommended to me by Steam as being similar to Slay the Princess by Black Tabby; it is a more visual novel style of game, but I can see why it is tagged with similar themes. The Princess, Player, and Narrator are all complex characters, even if it takes a little exploration to figure it out at first; and it really explores the meaning of choice that we take for granted in games.
Another game that has horror elements and gets you into the world is Control by Remedy, but it is a third person shooter where you become more powerful over the course of the game, which might tone down the horror aspect for players who like to feel in control.
The Magic Circle lets you fight the game devs and help a character from within the game.
...and I can't think of another game with an obsessive girlfriend - we need more of those.
From what I hear, "You, Me, and Her: A Love Story" did it better than DDLC.
I really should get around to playing them both to compare already.

I recall the game "Only If" being similar to MiSide- give it a gawk! :)
Would you recommend trying out DDLC?
I would! It's different of course, it's a visual novel with plenty of choices. But yeah, if ur okay with VNs
