Customer (for economists) = selfish / greedy / rational.
It's normal for a minority of contrarians to hate on popular stuff like MiSide, always happens. But you'll have a very hard time arguing that it's a bad game, because it isn't.
It's in the top 10 highest rated games on Steam, ever, and for hundreds of valid reasons. You can find those reasons by looking at reviews, videos or simply interacting with the community.
But you won't.
I read the reviews and watched a lot of Youtube videos about the game, that was enough for me to visualize the portrait of those who play it. And I already know who you are just by looking at your profile. It's a total cringe.
I knew the target audience of miside would look like this, but the problem is that there are too many of people like you to shape the Steam charts with terrible games like dokidoki or miside
So to answer what the popularity is and why most people buy it :
it's a good story, first and foremost.
It's the same reason that people prefer Undertale, and family friendly VNs.
If you strip away all of the gameplay elements from these games, you're left with just a really good story.
It also has philosophical super-meta commentary which is the same reason that people take interest in The Stanley Parable.
Don't even dare compare Undertale or Stanley Parable to this game.
Each of these games brought something new to the gaming industry and created great fandoms. What about Miside? A crap game for puberty anime-lovers-n3rds whose most popular discussions on the forums are requests to add 18+ and the ability to look up a character's skirt?
And the Undertail fandom has a lot of adult drawings of Toriel, and other characters.
What's your point? In both cases, what the fandom does, does not represent the game.
Same thing can be said about Pokemon, as anyone who has been paying attention to the recent leaks about Typhlosion can tell you - and that one wasn't even written by a fan, even if it's just beta content that was never supposed to be seen by the public.
The entire basis of your argument entails ignoring everything about the actual game and pointing to external factors instead. Be honest, you didn't watch more than 2 minutes of it on YouTube.
