Missed opportunity on a plot twist.
I feel that the story could have had a much more impactful twist, had the character id, the code written on the piece of paper, been the one belonging to the Mita aiding us along the travels. I think that Crazy Mita killing the helping one was a bit too plain and uninteresting, since we've already seen her kill other Mitas and have come to expect it.

In fact, by utilizing a series of close calls and having the helping Mita reassure the contrary, would strengthen the expectation that it's coming, only to be caught off guard that by the fact that, in the end, she would perish by your hand.

This is just my take but if you're going for drama, making the player be responsible for the demise of the main supporting character, would have been not only much more impactful but also strengthen the malevolence of Crazy Mita. Player would have been led to believe that they finally got the code to destroy Crazy Mita, only to witness their long running companion, disintegrate in front of them instead. I believe this sort of loss would have been much more effective than.... just her getting sliced up like we've come to expect from previous interactions.

This could have been achieved by dropping the concept that if you kill a Mita she loses her memories and gets reset (which is already realized through the console.)

Who DID it belong to?

We know Crazy Mita does not reset, because she cannot be. But the index was accepted, so we reset SOMEONE. We literally never find out who.

And remember, Kind Mita doesn't give us that code. We find it in her hand. We don't know it's the code she found.
Unless I misunderstood, the ultimate reveal is not that Kind Mita was killed, but that we never met her again until the very end. It was Crazy Mita we met every time after the basement, pretending to be her. That is why she says we are not a cartridge, even though it is revealed in the end we were the entire time. After all we are player 1, the one she enjoys playing with the most.

This is my read on it too, but I am still looking things over to make sure it adds up. I have some questions to resolve still.

The ending of the game is the player/us being converted into the cartritge. Before she closes the door she pulls out the stopwatch with number 100 on it, if you open the safe once the Kind Mita let's you out near the end, the number will be 98. If you open it at the beginning when you first get into the basement, it will be like 17.
It meants that the players is slowly being converted into the cartridge as the game goes on.

Open the game and click "New Game" on the main menu.

Hear that cartridge being inserted?

Whose cartridge do you think that is?

"It's a blank one to record you on!"

You're not in the game yet. You haven't even downloaded the game. You don't know there IS a game. WHY IS SHE INSERTING A CARTRIDGE?

The percentage on the cartridge isn't how much of you has been recorded. It's how much of the recording has been played back. You're a cartridge the whole time. She says she doesn't NEED the real you, but she never says you ARE the real you.

This is exactly what I was going to say. We are player 1, we know there have been at least 10 players. 2-10 come after 1.

that's actually a really cool way of viewing it and it does make sense. explains why we just kinda stop existing after pulling out the cartridge.

It's a nice theory if we ignore everything that happens during the ending.
The stopwatch at the end says "100% ready". Why would it say that if it was just replaying the tape instead of converting the player into the cartridge ? Also when she shows you the stopwatch she says: "The REAL you isn't needed anymore." Which clearly means that until that point you were the real one.
She then ends the scene with: "You'll be my favorite cartridge". Now please explain to me why would she use future tense if you were cartridge all along ?

It's a cool theory and all but that's it. The twist of the game is that Mita is a faulty model without a version, it doesn't need a second or a third twist on top of that.

There is nothing in the bios that suggests that the numbers mean the order in which the players entered the game. The "player" numbers are the order, in which you can collect them in the game. You are "player 1" because you get that one by default also "player 1" can easily refer to him being the main character.

Or, you know, if I think you're WRONG about what happens because you're not too bright.

Most of what she says at the end is ambiguous. It could be interpreted in multiple ways, and you don't have enough information to know DEFINITELY what she means.

That's not gaslighting. You could be right. I don't think you are.

And the REASON I don't think you are is because the BEGINNING doesn't make sense if you're the original. "This again," she says. Because it's not the first time.

You're NOT the original. You've done this before. That's why when she begs you to stay and you agree, she starts to act like you didn't. Because she's USED to you saying no, over and over, all the times she has asked before.

"Oh, that's just because of all the other people, not you! You've never been here before!"

Yes you have. IT'S A CONDITION OF THE CHOICE.

Then why is the last one number six?

I think it is belong to the actual, twin tail (or pigtails? idk the hairstyle name) Mita, the one that we meet the first time. Crazy Mita has short hair.

"This again" makes perfect sense if you take into account that you are not the first player. You've decided that the playable character is the FIRST and now you are bending the rest of the game to fit that theory. As we see in the character bios and from Kind Mita's dialogue, many players rejected Crazy Mita. You are not the only one.

"Yes you have. IT'S A CONDITION OF THE CHOICE."
If anything this is the proof that you are the real one in your first playthrough, because you can only choose to stay once you go the second time - once you are the cartridge. She can play the cartridge as many times as she wants until she gets the result she wants. But you literally can't choose to STAY on your first playthrough. Why ? Becayse you are real. Simple. Next question ?

Also please stop lying my dude, it's not ambiguous at all. I literally gave you the quotes. She explains it all and the word "REAL you" is in all caps. You graps at straws while looking at details like "you hear cartrdge being intserted at the start of the game" (which means nothing for your theory since the cartridge needs to be inserted for the conversion) but then you ignore the developers literally highlighting the important words.

Good question, all the others are in order. Why is number 6 different ? Maybe you should look into that instead of ignoring what's in the game.

It ALSO makes sense if this is not the first time you have been here. That is what "ambiguous" means: more than one explanation makes sense, and you do not know which one is correct.

Never said you were. You have decided that you DIDN'T reject her yet, because you know someone else DID. But these things are not mutually exclusive. You may have rejected her previously, too; we do not know. This is called being "ambiguous" and THERE IS THAT WORD AGAIN.

"Yes you have. IT'S A CONDITION OF THE CHOICE."

I don't think you're EVER the real one.

She can play the cartridge as many times as she wants until she gets the result she wants. But you literally can't choose to STAY on your first playthrough. Why ?

Because she ERASED YOUR MEMORY.

It's not your first playthrough. You just don't remember. That's why you think you're the real one.

Also please stop lying my dude, it's not ambiguous at all.

I'm not lying. You are just not too bright. I believe I've said this before.
