Where is the save data? [SOLVED]
I just suffered a crash and had all my progress wiped. I was on level 49 or 50 and now it's back to square one. [insert unhappy face] Where is the save data stored so that I can back it up periodically? Better still, I have a friend who's on level 45 or thereabouts. Would it be possible to use his save to get me close to where I was? As much as I love the game - and I do love it - I don't relish the prospect of starting all over again, especially with the threat of a wipeout happening again.

Additional: I swapped a file in steamapps \ common \ mousecraft \ userdata called 'save' with my friend's 'save' file (after turning off cloud sync) but that hasn't worked. I then swapped the entire user data folder but that didn't work either.

Incidentally, this crash - or freeze to be more accurate, where I had to use ctrl+alt+del to exit the game - was the third instance in three days. While I wouldn't claim to have a PC that never crashes or freezes, three times in three days is kind of worrying.

There's a save.xml under "~/Steam/SteamApps/common/User Data" if you're using the Linux version of the game. I don't think that's where it should have been, as mentioned in another thread, but I believe it's the save data, even if the xml doesn't contain anything comprehensible besides the tags.

If you're on a Windows PC I think that's the equivalent of "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\User Data\".

Thanks for the reply. I'm on a Windows 7 PC and there's nothing corresponding to C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\User Data\ as far as I can see, neither a folder nor file.

So you're able to find the "common" folder but "User Data" is not in it? That's interesting. Maybe they've put it under the proper path on Windows, which should be something like "%AppData%\Crunching Koalas\MouseCraft" if I remember the Windows conventions correctly.

Hey Inspiral,

This is pretty weird... The saves should sync with cloud, even if they got corrupted during the crash. Have you got an info about downloading or uploading the files to Steam Cloud?

To avoid the crashes, I would suggest to turn ON the VSync option, in the launcher.

The save data is written in save.xml file in the main folder of the game. That's the place where you found the User Data folder.

Please let us know if it helped.

Cheers and sorry for the trouble.

The save.xml for me and two of my friends (running W7 and W8) is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\MouseCraft\User Data.

Anyway, last night I started again and reached level 15. Exited the game normally. This morning I am on Level 1 again. Updates are on and cloud sync is on. It would appear that last crash did something to the game installation and it is no longer reading my save.

I am going to delete the game now (and any related files I can find, such as C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\'my steam id'\252750) prior to reinstallation. Hopefully it's be ok then. I'll let you know.

Reinstalling the game has solved my problem. It would appear that the last crash made it so that it could not read/write to the save file. I reinstalled the game, popped my friend's save in the user data folder and hey presto, I'm close to being back where I was! While I have every faith that the advice to enable v-sync will prevent further crashes, I am going to manually back-up my save.xml after every few levels, just to be on the safe side. :)
