Do PLAYERS have to pay or just the Game Master?
The few applications of this type I looked at required the players to pay as much as the DM (Which is completely $&#*ing rediculous because they litteraly don't even do anything). Our group consists of over half a dozen people, only half of which are regularly in a game.

So my question is whether it is viable for players to join games just using the demo?

Oh and while we're on the subject, is it possible to mod ponies into it...? Don't give me that look! My players refuse to do anything that doesn't involve colourful animals...

Unfortunately. . . yes. OR. . you can buy an ultimate license and then anyone can connect to you and play with the demo version. Downside? Ultimate License is $115.00 after you buy the software. This is becoming an issue with me as well. I have friends that want to play, but I can't get them to pony up the money to buy the software. Very frustrating. I understand they want to make money. It just seems like they could limit the number of people that can connect at the full license with players using the demo version. Like 2 people max (not counting DM) as opposed to whatever the limit is for an ultimate license.
Mod ponies. . . well. .. its just like playing a pen and paper RPG so, yes.
From what I have seen of it, it depends on what version you buy. If you buy the standard version that is here on steam, the players and the DM pay the same. The program comes with all the tools you need to host, create, or join a campaign. However if you purchase the ultimate edition that is not on steam (yet) but is available directly from their website https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/ you can get the ultimate edition that will allow demo users to connect and play in your games, so you can pay and the players can join for free.

and as for ponies you can put your own art in the game however you want, so yes, yes, ponies for everyone.

i have to say - what drives this attitude?
the gm buys source books (often many many volumes) and spends hours (usually 2-3x more time than the players) in prep for a game and the players wont shell out a few bucks so they can join in?
when you and the boys go to the movies do you ask at the ticket counter if its interactive? cos if you are just sitting there surely you shouldnt have to pay.
@Overburn - ask your players to chip in a few bucks every month towards your source materials if they wont buy a license. going without 2 beers and a pizza will get them a license.
as for ponies - yeah - you can have ponies...
I don't know. I am not saying I agree with it. Most of my friends (who used to play RPG games on pen and paper but havent for a while) weigh spending $30.00 on this or waiting on steam sales for AAA games. Again, not saying i agree with it. But it is what it is. I saw this and instantly bought it. It was a no brainer for me. Hell i bought a 4 pack of Virtual Table Top for card games. . . havent decided which friends I want to give copies to yet though.
im not having a go at you... its not an uncommon thing... for some reason players like to think the GM is going to lay on everything for them - all they gotta do is turn up...
you can definitely get some great games at budget prices here :)
this app cant compare on price to some of these other games but is still good value - so long as you use it. i have an ultimate license which takes away that hassle but i always push my players to buy a license to help support and grow the product.
I will probably buy the ultimate license at some point. Sucks not playing. Dunno what happened but I got hit with the urge to play pen and paper games again. All my buddies said we can't get together enough to do it in the same location. Well, this solves that. Ah well. im going to continue working on my campaign anyways.
By the way, if you ever need a player <------------ I was always a DM back in the day. I would love to just play for once.
Overburn alot of people are stating they are gonna start running demo games and one shots because new to PnP players or new to FG2 players want to learn what this software is about. also If I am not mistaken you can upgrade from full to ultimate without paying the full 115$ but I could be wrong

It's $115 to upgrade from full to ultimate. It's $149 to but the ultimate straight out. The current sale of full licenses for $30 makes the buying the full and upgrade $4 cheaper than buying an ultimate straight off at present.
But they're not paying for a seat in a theater; they're paying for a video-game, one in which they won't actually be doing anything. I'm pretty sure a license to stare at a game board isn't worth the asking price. What they're paying for is GMing tools, and only 3 of us even GM.
*scratches chin* 3 gm do sound like alot of value to me and with a 4pack sale...faulty logic is faulty?

In the vast majority of role playing games I've played on Fantasy Grounds I've done quite a lot as a player. Certainly not sitting and staring at a screen - it's been very interactive and I've enjoyed it immensely.

See this post for an example of the "cost" of being a player on Fantasy Grounds: http://steamcommunity.com/app/252690/discussions/2/558756168175980960/ Grancey_Invective has played (not GM'd, played) for over 400 hours since he bought his license - no additional costs, the license is a one-off payment. If someone got similar usage out of the product as Grancey_invective has and they buy a single license at the current sale price they will be getting their RPG gaming goodness for 7.5 cents per hour. Awesome!

Even if a player plays one 4 hour session a week for 6 months, they're still paying less than 30 cents per hour for their gaming enjoyment. The more they play the more they save - no additional costs, free upgrades, no subscription fees. And if they want to GM at some point they can - no additional cost.

You're paying for a "play in an interactive RPG game with my friends anywhere in the world without leaving my comfy chair" license. It's great fun whether you're a player or a GM - some people prefer being GMs, some people prefer being players. It's the same cost per participant.
