I own the PHB an MM, how does the OGL/SRD affect me?
Just wondering here. Did I get screwed?

I still don't know the difference between affect and effect, did I use it properly?

You did. :) You don't really need the SRD. The SRD is like D&D 5E Generic Edition. A more fleshed out version of the Basic Rules. Your PHB has all the same information that the SRD does plus more. Same for the MM.

The SRD is the framework that others can build content for 5E on without worrying about stepping on the intellectual property toes of Wizards of the Coast. For example, previously companies would release content that was "compatible with the 5th edition of the worlds most popular game" while now they can say "D&D 5E Compatible (under OGL)". They can reference "You get Advantage on the attack" instead of "You get a tactical advantage on the attack" and such.

This is a Good Thing™ but the full rules, like you have, will have more content and more fleshed out content than just the SRD. Like there is a single example Background in the SRD while the Player's Handbook has all of them available.

Thanks for the response.

Oh well, I'm happy with my purchases and I want great things for Fantasy Grounds. Have no problem sending them some bones

the MM has full descriptions of the monsters and has some additional monsters. you can get by without the MM now if your budget is tight but you will always have the better experience with the full MM.
the PHB again has waaaaay more descriptive info and also has more archetypes than the SRD.
I think the PHB is still a must buy for most 5e GMs and the MM still adds good value. I dont own the DMG so cant comment on that one.

Wotc included a bunch of stuff in the SRD -- around 400 pages worth of content pulled from the PHB, MM and DMG, but reworded in a few places to remove some information, restrict options and remove references to things within their worlds. By comparison, those same three books contained 960 or so pages worth of content.

We decided to go ahead and give away our version of the SRD content for free instead of charging for it. Some people are going to be happy with just the SRD content and others are going to want the full content. We hope people who were on the fence before will see how awesome the SRD content is and then that will encourage them to go all-in for the full content pieces. I really have no idea how this will turn out.

Here is a blog post I wrote about the subject:

Thank you very much for the info.

Truth be told, I would of still bought those things. Planning on buying the DMG too. I just like what's going on here and want to support it

I have the PHB and I think it's a good decision. I'm not loosing anything, there are just others potentially gaining. And in the end, the more ppl using FG the better for us all.

I own all the books Im assuming that means nothing to the game right? If so what things would i need to buy to play 5th edition on this ?
Specificaly to be just a player and not a DM.

Hi IronSides
If playing with an Ultimate GM you dont need anything
If playing with a Full GM you will need a Full License also.
All licenses now include the D&D Basic Rules and the full SRD in Fantasy Grounds format.
You can do a LOT with this (as a player and as GM) but you wont have access to all the Players Handbook options. You can manually type them in if needed - you would only enter in those that YOU need.
If you want all the PHB options in FG format all ready to go then the Players Handbook (Complete Core Classes) is the way to go.
