FG vs Roll20 community wise.
I'm curious how bad the FG community is compared to Roll20. I've been kicked from a few games or have DMs ditch the group or players leaving and the group dying. How often does this sort of thing happen in a community that has to pay for everything.

I was interested in switching over especially with how sensitive the D&D/Pathfinder community is over there but I don't want to run into the same issues here.

Almost all online games will have some tendency to fall apart simply because there is less perceived commitment. But being in both forum communities I can say that FG's is miles above Roll20's in welcoming and helping new people. Come on in and join us. You can probably even find some games where the GM has the Ultimate so you don't have to buy FG right away. Look in the LFG section.

For a very dedicated group of players and GMs, check out the Fantasy Grounds College group. They have a website and Discord group.

If you are being kicked out of multiple groups, though, that might be something else you should look into. It could completely be on each of those groups -- but as the number of groups you get kicked out of grows, it might be time for some self reflection. Some GMs and players are very fun to play with. Occasionally you find one or the other that is only concerned with their own enjoyment, even if it is at the expense of others.

I was kicked only from two games out of the 20+ I've tried to be apart of. Most were broken apart by others or DMs. The two I was kicked from were because work kept me from a game and DM couldn't handle I didn't notify them while I was working. The other was character design the DM hated.

I'll check em out thanks.

I'll check it out, thanks for the info. Even if you had said FG was slightly better it would be worth it.

I don't know anything about the Roll20 community besides what I see on YouTube. Its not good, so I tend to not use that platform.

I've had an A+ with the Fantasy Grounds community so far, been using since 2015. I've played in over 20 different campaigns, and I have never seen a player get kicked. A player might "ghost" out if they are not feeling the game. They might even come up with an excuse to drop out. Its happens. But never seen 1 person kicked out of any game I have played in.

As a DM, I have ran over 7 campaigns. I have never kicked a player out of my games, except for once. That one game I recruited from Steam LFG forums. I have had players "ghost" out of my games, and I simple replace them to keep the campaign running. And a lot of other DM's do the same.

I personally think Roll20 is a more younger crowd, where as FG is a little older.

"I personally think Roll20 is a more younger crowd, where as FG is a little older."
Probably because there are way more people using it would be my guess. Just by shear numbers there is going to be larger demographics of the various age groups. I looked up Fantasy Grounds on www.steamcharts.com and the average amount of players right now is 155 with a max of 422. There's no way for me to see Roll20's number but they just celebrated 5 million users.

What I want to know is why aren't more people using Fantasy Grounds because from the numbers it looks like a pretty small group.

Also, for perspective, I'm old and owned a comic/gaming store for 14+ years. I was selling 2 years for someone else before that. I'm not the average tabletop gamer.

Smiteworks do release numbers, I have seen them posted over on EnWorld.

There are more cause FG is sold outside of Steam.

HEY!! a place to throw in my 2cents! - FG Community & Age. I would factor in costs. FG has a steeper commitment to costs for the DM. The players can get off scott free because they really don't have to buy anything. so that burdens ONE member of the team - The DM. ALSO, that is a bit of coin to ask and that would MOSTLY be the older members who want to do an 'investment' on their side. Also, since players don't really have to fork out anything except time to learn and master the system, they can up and leave if their nose itches. The DM is in for a longer haul because of the money already spent.

The Roll20...from an outsider, everybody is paying..so you want SOMETHING for your money..you've committed and therefore, will put in more effort. Also, the platform is different than FG....whenever I notice noob questions..they think "I bought it, why can't I play it'? ..You bought the tools..you still need to invest in what you want to construct!

I hope that gives some clarity for your thoughts. Cheers!

pay for something on roll20? I've never seen someone pay a dime on roll20 except to the DM. Most DMs on roll20 want 15 USD a session. These paid to play games are usually filled with people who join for the first free session and leave as well. So to say everyone is paying on roll20 is wrong unless you mean paying the DM. (Not being rude, I know you said from an outsider)

FG, I finally caved and bought. I see more groups without the UI than with, the only thing DMs are paying for would be the modules. But the two games I'm in now seemed x400 better in quality than roll20.

I'd tell everyone to switch now that I've seen the difference for myself. Bite the 40 USD and join higher quality games.

I use both roll20 and FG and they both have there good and bad. Both communities have a lot of the same issues with people ghosting etc. As a Gm the majority of my players stick around I normally have 1-2 drop within the first few weeks most of the rest stay through the campaign.

In my opinion a good application process helps eliminate this. Instead of just inviting the first to apply. Just stick with it especially with FG their community imo is so much better as far as people sticking around etc. Because once you do find that good core group of players it's worth it.

I do notice better quality games when I recruit people with standard or up only.

- What I encountered, because I was told by 'ALL my local DND players (who i found out later, ONLY mastered R20, barely scratched FG) that R20 was the way to go and to buy the books again and everything else..and RIGHT BEFORE i purchase...found out they never intended to do any remote sessions?!?!

So now it was my independent project..and thankfully FG won-out! I've been MORE satisfied with the Players/Members than anything i've seen from R20.

Sadly, you are right. It is their website, it is their service and it is their right to exclude me because I'm white, male, and middle class.

It is my right not to spend a dime on Roll20 and get Ultimate Licence for FG, I'm saving up for FG Unity so I can get it right away.

FG community, is also quite nice as far as I've seen at least at forums.
