Fantasy grounds Unity or Foundry Virtual Table top?
I'm planning on giving myself a early present and planning on getting the Ultimate Unity edition of Fantasy ground, but a buddy of mine told me about Foundry Virtual Table Top and told me to wait. What do you think of both apps?

Sounds interesting, but as a new entry, it will have a lack of digital media for quite a while.
Yes definitely looks good, but I am wondering if it will get much traction given it is up against Roll20 which has a free option for GMs and FGU which, while requiring payment, will have a lot of RPG game system integration and content.

Still more alternatives is always good.

I'm mostly looking to use a virtual tabletop for DnD purposes. I use TableTop simulator at the moment, but I'm getting sick of 3d and my players getting to thirsty for models and spawning in their character sheets into the game as objects etc. Slows the game down, I want something simple and fantasy grounds and roll20 look complicated

I have played with Tabletop simulator a fair bit and it suits some boardgames and miniature games but for Rpgs it is too slow ,whereas with Fantasy Grounds after a small bit of practice the gameplay is quicker than in person, the Automation really speeds things up.To start with just use the Map and Tokens and slowly bring in other features as you get used to the user interface. You will love it,at its heart it is a 2D version of Tabletop Simulator.

Sorry, the topic is Fantasy grounds Unity or Foundry Virtual Table top? So what do you think of Foundery Virtual Table Top?

If you want to play D&D with your friends and have almost everything done for you, your hit rolls calculated, your spell saves automated so you can focus on actually telling the story and setting the scene as a DM, then Fantasy Grounds is the way to go. FG Unity is only in Beta so you can't even buy it yet, however I'm sure it won't that that long... six months ish is my "Guess", for most stuff on FGC to get ported over. I suggest you watch a few comparison videos, also consider the cost of the DMG, Players handbook and Modules and consider the fact that most of the stuff in a Fantasy Grounds module is already encoded so you simply drag and drop.

I'm the developer of Foundry Virtual Tabletop and this showed up on my feed. Given this is the FG steam community, I'll avoid tackling the comparison question and just say that I think it's tremendous for our hobby that more products are available as options.

For anyone who is interested in learning a bit more about the current state (the linked video is a year old, and the project has come a long way since then) - consider dropping by our Discord server. You can find a link on the Foundry VTT website!

What an interesting thread...

Well, I am in sort of a similar situation to the OP-

Many years ago I used to play on a VTT called D20PRO but several computers and a million emails later and I have no idea what my copy was registered under...

So,I've been getting the itch to run a game again, picked up the 5th edition books (Which I surprisingly really like) and am trying to decide if I'm going to rebuy D20pro or get something else... My gaming group is scattered across the USA and having home games is not feasible anymore.

Fantasy Grounds seems to be the gold standard (always was) but the price point is downright insane- I bought the 5th edition foil covered collectors books from $83 shipped to my door. Thats the Players Handbook,DM guide,Monster Manuel and DM screen in a really nice case- And again, these are the foil covered collectors editions of these books...The Players Handbook alone for digital is now on sale like $20 something dollars alone- Just seems way too pricey for whats offered- Granted, it might be worth it to some but if I'm going to be dropping money on this hobby again I would think the bulk should be in the actual books and not on digital...

Not to mention ,there is a new version in the works.

The foundry looks good- And I'll be wishlisting this for a (hopefully major) sale down the road but I just cant do it... Those prices hurt.

I wouldn't put much faith in a new virtual tabletop. I remember GM Forge coming out and them pushing the idea of players adding all the content through the Steam Workshop but then the community just died after like the first month.

Yeah, chances are i'll break down and buy this when it goes on sale.

I'm sure its worth it and dont intend to come across as saying its not- I just already spend way too much money on my (too many) hobbies and at this point i'll just have to wait. Kind of a bummer but it is what it is.

Few years down the track-
I have played Foundry and also FGU.

Not played Foundry recently ,but from my time with both I prefer FGU.

i've been using it a bit, i'd give you a lot of great examples, but i didn't get good sleep probably like an hour and a half, woke up to my closet falling apart but i've had bad luck for 3 weeks so i should of expected something like that, but i can at last highlight my favorite things to use on foundry since it doesn't require much thought, not sure if this works with fgu never used it (got into ttrpgs recently) but you can do 2d or 3d, also your 2d tokens can be animated and the board stays consistent whether one player chooses to use the 3d over the 2d, it also works with dungeondraft so i thought that was pretty cool, and uh works with dnd beyond and all that, like your stuff gets imported.

And all that JUST got added to FGU. Also note, this is the FGC section so might have gotten missed. :)
