Are you playing or get referred to at all, or is this just a "manage a group without being there" rpg? Would be much less immersive, if you do not get mentioned at all.

Protagonist is a mage/healer by default. Protag plays a big role in story cutscenes and has his/her own personality. A smart righteous is what I would call it.
All key decisions are made by protagonist.

There are a few missions where you can play protag but generally you don't. In terms of story you end up being 'strategist'/'leader' who supports the squad with tactics in terms of gameplay.

Story wise protag is not 'powerful' - in bad ending you get massacred along with everyone else in one hit and in general you never play a power role, you are more of a commander.

Your character frequently shows up in dialogue and in cutscenes, but not directly inside of battles. They basically take on the role of “overseeing” combat encounters. In some battles, particular story-relevant ones (called “Event battles”), they’ll appear in the beginning and at the end to direct the mercenaries on what to do.

Outside of battles, there is a town management layer where you wander about the hub zone as your leader character and level up various aspects of your units: training them to have new abilities and reach higher levels, smith equipment for them, hire new mercenaries at the tavern, use the church to apply blessings aka buffs, etc.

Most of the story actually revolves pretty heavily around your character, though some do also have their own narratives going on somewhat in the background.

The one way that your character does make an appearance on the battlefield is through the Tactical skills menu. They don’t participate directly in the fighting, but they’re able to cast global spells that can be used to turn the tide in your favor at key moments.

For example, casting Thunderbolt to strike down an enemy or an explosive barrel in order to get rid of a major threat that your units cannot deal with from their current positions. Or using an ability that buffs your whole army to deal more damage.

It’s another part of the town management section of the game, where you can level up to get new types of Tactical skills, and you gain points during combat to cast skills by performing specific actions against the enemy units.
It's like Dante from Limbus Company. Would be nice if you could use your main though, maybe in a later update.

There are some missions where the protagonist can be played, one of them is during a mission for the prince's route in Spiral of Destinies. For the most part though they are not playable directly.
