Tonight ? Work. And I don't know if the demo answers any of these questions, so steam forums are the obvious better answer compared to losing hours on a demo.
That said, it is ultimately a gacha game and unless they make the effort to preserve it offline then once the game ends its service you have nothing to show for it and cannot play it again. Until such time, you should be able to play the single-player mode without having to spend.
The way it's set up would be ideal for something like mega man x-dive offline where they made a paid version (which is sold for $30). But whether or not they intend to do that, we have no idea. Even if they do, it would probably be like x-dive where people had to restart from scratch (although it does have a good rate of progression).
So if you're looking for the next FFT then this is not it. It is a tactical mobile rpg that also happens to be available on steam. Other forum posts here will expand upon the details.
At this time, the demo is completely free, lacking any sort of monetary transactions. However, the gacha side of the game is also limited to mostly just a prequel/tutorial introduction to the games' mechanics.
You are given enough resources for a '10 pull' which is a rather standard start to most gachas. I am uncertain if this first free pull is completely rigged or not, but at the very least you are awarded the character Maitha, as she is plot relevant going forward.
After completing the available Gacha story path(less than an hour, if you are rushing), the single player campaign opens.
The campaign allows you to bring along up to 3 of your gacha characters with their advancements to the campaign as starter units. if you are lucky and got a named/legendary character, this can be quite powerful.
The campaign has multiple story paths, similar to tactics ogre, but only one major path is available in the demo. I really wanted to go Papal States, but no, union only.
The campaign also has roguelike elements, with each run starting from relative scratch and many characters/skills/events/rewards are RNG, making it a unique feel each time.
in my experience, the early to mid game of the campaign is the hardest, due to lack of the prior point. However, once you hit your stride and with a few kitted out characters, the late game is a steam roll.
The endings all depend on who you gain reputation with, if you do Papal States quests whenever they are available the game will take you that route. The most common first playthrough ending is Union.
Some spoiler alert, but this guide and video lay it out
