Eldritch

More Lovecraftian games?
Hi,

Eldritch is one of the few game reproducing the Lovecraft vibe very well, even with visual design inspired by Minecraft.

But i definitely need more Lovecraftian games, and i don't know what to play that really feels like this.
I already know about:
Eternal Darkness : Sanity's Requiem
Amnesia/Penumbra Series
Call of Cthulhu : Dark Corners of the Earth
Maybe some other game i can't remember for now.

And somehow, Dark Souls, Silent Hill, Resident Evil.

I'm not searching for a game drawing some inspiration from HP Lovecraft, but a game heavily rooted in those typical Lovecraft atmospheres like Eldritch (i know it's kindah hard to explain).

Am i the only one seeking for this?

RE4 is Shadows Over Innsmouth. (though closer to joint spanish production of Stuart Gordon's Dagon) in tone. Call of Cthulhu Wasted Land is neat and I can't stress the Lovecraft mods for Shadowrun Dragonfall/Returns. Fallout's Dunwhich Building quest and Point Lookout are great.

I know you said you do not like turn based games, but Darkest Dungeon is a nice fusion of those with perma death. Wasteland 1 has some slight elements with the cult stuff and the Sherlock Holmes game might be up your alley. Warcraft 3 and WoW have heavy use of "Old Ones" and other Lovecraftian themes.

You could also play Evil Dead 3 on PS1 and The Thing on PS2. Yes, Prisoner of Ice and I can't stress the Mass Effect Lovecraft elements in 1. Blood, Shadow of the Comet, Lurking Horror, Discworld Noir, and Daughter of Serpents.

Nah, still haven't tried it. Its origins are a turn off, but I may finally give it a go.

Once again, thanks for your recommendation, that's much more than what i expected.
I suddenly feel an urge to play RE4 and Fallout 3 again... but i don't have time for a rpg right now, i think i'll try to find one of the point'n'click mentioned above.

Oh what a cool coincidence, Darkness Within is on sale right now. That must be a sign from the Elders. Here we go.

From Wikipedia:

Video games, like films, have a rich history of Lovecraftian elements and adaptations. In 1987, The Lurking Horror was the first to bring the Lovecraftian horror subgenre to computer platforms. This was a text-based adventure game, released by Infocom, who are best known for the Zork series.

The seminal Lovecraftian role-playing game "Call of Cthulhu" has lent its name and other material to several video games in the adventure and RPG genre for platforms as diverse as the PC, consoles and mobile devices.

"Call of Cthulhu: Dark corners of the Earth" for Xbox and PC is chiefly regarded as the most popular. A First person Shooter with strong survival horror elements.

The game Amnesia: The Dark Descent is heavily inspired by Lovecraft's works, both in visual design as well as in plot device.

While other media have portrayed Lovecraftian elements in humorous ways as diverse as the Illuminati Card Game and a plethora of plush Cthulhu dolls, video games such as Cthulhu Saves the World (2010) have been less common.

Though Lovecraftian elements have appeared in MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft and Age of Conan since EverQuest, the 2012 game The Secret World was the first to feature Lovecraftian elements as one of its primary inspirations.

The games Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem and Bloodborne draw inspiration from H.P. Lovecraft.

Shadow of the Comet, a game which takes place in 19th century, is strongly inspired by the myth of Cthulhu."

The lurking horror? Never heard of it. I just googled it, it's a text/adventure game. I only played one or two text games, it's cool, 'cos just like a book, the player imagine the whole scenery instead of just watching it.

I know most of the other games mentioned by the article. Back in 2004, i was absolutely mind-blowed by Eternal Darkness, and without even knowing about Lovecraft, i became deeply fascinated by Lovecraftian horror.

You may want to look at Witchmarsh. It's still in development and not on Steam yet, but it looks very, very good. The Lovecraftian influence is palpable.. You control a team of paranormal investigators in the 1920's era American East Coast. The attention to detain looks to be pretty great, and I like the artstyle, though folks not admiring pixel art may be put off a bit. Anyhow, thats my contribution to the inspiration effort! Good luck!

Kholat sits on my wishlist as a potentially Lovecraftian game.
Been playing Alan Wake and it has some very explicit Lovecraftian themes reoccuring throughout it.
Downloaded a promising looking mod for Crysis called The Worry of Newport.
Also on my wishlist is Magrunner: Dark Pulse.
Remember that H.R. Giger was heavily influenced by Lovecraft, and his Alien design sits in a series called Necronomicon. So consider giving Alien Isolation a go ;)

Other than that, already mentioned The Vanishing of Ethan Carter which also is on my wishlist as a potential Lovecraftian game, and Bloodborne does look very much like it is influenced by the same sources, a shame it's not on PC, but their Dark Souls games have some Lovecraftian elements to them yes, Alone in the Dark the original one, none of the recent horror (in another definition of horror), The Penumbra/Amnesia series intrigue me, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth obviously, and I do like Dead Space, even the third one!
Never really thought about Mass Effect having Lovecraftian elements to it, but now that I think about it, sure, and Resident Evil 4 does have some elements as well, though feels more comedy-like than horror, isn't The Thing also available on the PC? Maybe not as a digital download.

Thx!

Never been a huge fan of Alan Wake, mainly because of its gameplay that doesn't appeal to me really much.
Think it's time to reinstall Crysis then, i love that trilogy so much (even tho people hate the 2nd and the 3rd). But damn, by disc drive is dead. But i'll keep that in mind.

The vanishing of... is on my wishlist too, but i heard it's a 2-5hour game, so i'm not really willing to pay more than 7 bucks for it, specially if it doesn't have enough replay value.

The thing is available on pc, i have an old retail version, but i don't know about digital version, never checked it. Maybe GOG is selling it? It's an underrated game btw. The difficulty is a bit flawed though. Already know about the other one. Never realized about the lovecraftian theme in Mass Effect, i've always seen the Start Trek/Star Wars inspiration more.

Alien Isolation was really impressive, it's cool to see a publisher releasing a survival horror like that, and not some multiplayer-oriented horrific shooter.
