Also, looking again, I just realized the characters are procedurally generated. Not saying it's a bad thing, but I am hoping for single-player to have actual, fleshed-out characters with their own backstories. Guess I'll have to wait and see.
I think for the most part we want to be closer to the experience of playing a Rimworld or an XCOM where no amount of writing can rival the attachment you build for a character that has its own arc, quirks, and things that have happened to them. But "people must grow attached to these characters" has always been a staple in development - we're just approaching it from a different point of view. There's XCOM characters I loved more than Nathan Drake.
