The classic controls are the same in TRI to V (Chronicles). Only Angel of Darkness had different controls, and not for the better. If you have issues with those controls IV-VI won't change that.
Modern controls may be somewhat better than in the I-III remaster, since the dev team has been working on ways to refine them.

1. Advance further into Tomb Raider 1 to see if you can work out your grabbing situation before you consider buying the IV-VI Remastered collection.
2. The first half of Tomb Raider 1 is the easiest of the Playstation 1 era Tomb Raider games to play. The later games add more enemies and traps in every level; the puzzles become increasingly difficult to solve; and the levels are more complex to navigate. If you're struggling now, you may not enjoy game mechanics that were added to later games, like jump-to-rope-and-swing to cross gaps.
3. Although the games can be completed with just a keyboard, using a controller makes the game much more intuitive. I recommend you buy a controller instead of (or at least prior to) buying TR IV-VI Remastered.
4. You still have 100+ hours of gameplay ahead of you with TR I-III Remastered. I think once you begin playing TR III, you'll have a very good idea whether you want to continue with TR IV (The Last Revelation) and V (Chronicles).
Tomb Raider VI (The Angel of Darkness) has a different play style than the previous games. Mods for the currently available PC version of AoD on Steam replicate the controls scheme from the next game in the franchise, "Tomb Raider: Legend." I suspect that the remastered version of AoD will do the same.
If he can't enjoy TR 1-3 then I don't think there is any point in buying 4-6 for him.(Since 4 and 5 use the same kind of controls)
one of the reasons the game is great
is there any other game with controls like that ?
2.Syphon Filter 1-3
3.Indiana Jones infernal machine(only the PC version, N64 version has different controls)
4.Prince of Persia 3D
In all three games preferably.
You should get the hang of it, that's what the mansion is for.
And if you can't after hours of trying, maybe you should skip on 4-6 for now.
