Its due to the sheer map being objects rather than a mix of objects and splines and due to lightmaps, and general detail it's a lot to deal with, they tried to copy what the author to Hafen and Hamburg do but the texture quality is too high so id try the 4GB patch firstly and then set your target framerate at 35, play with reduced Multithreading and have your Max Tex Mem at 2048.0.
I already have the 4Gb patch installed but I'll try the other suggestions you both gave and see if that improves things a little more.

Don't tinker TOO long. Your shift starts at 15:00.
For me that was the biggest performance killer. When Aachen released, the bus was basically undriveable. It got much better with updates and is now somewhat enjoyable for me, but still other busses work alot better.
