StarDrive 2 Master Fixes Thread
I'll be trying to correlate various fixes for the game into a single location.

if you have a fix that's not here feel free to let me know and I'll add it

Please note you should try at all the fixes. The game may hang/crash/not load/etc and there's no real single cause for all of them. So make sure you're doing everything here first.

Raptr Incompatibility

There appears to be an incompatibility with the game an Raptr. If you have Raptr, please exit out of it completely then see if that helps.

Perform a re-verify of the game cache

Sometimes your game data may get corrupted. Perform Steam's reverify of the game data

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335&l=english

Delete Application Data

Note if you have ANY problems in the game you should try this first. This fixes problem ranging from game crashes, to UI issues, to missing windows etc. So it's important you try this fix no matter what your particular problem is.

There may be some corrupt data that a reinstall doesn't fix. Go to

On Windows

c:\users\<username>\AppData\LocalLow\Zero Sum Games\StarDrive 2

If you can't find this folder you will need to unhide hidden folders on Windows

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hidden-files#show-hidden-files=windows-7

On Macs

~/library/Application Support/unity.Zero Sum Games.StarDrive 2

Rename this folder and restart the game

DISCLAIMER THIS WILL IMPACT YOUR SAVE GAMES AND CUSTOM SHIP DESIGNS

Your save games and custom ship designs are saved here. Which is why you should make a copy of it if so you don't lose those. If the above fixes your problem, copy back your save and ship designs back in.

Update your video drivers

It's always a good idea to update your video drivers.

How to force your AMD/Nvidia Card on Laptops

Laptop users should force S2 to use the AMD/Nvidia card instad of the integrated one

Nvidia:

* Right click your desktop
* NVIDIA Control Panel ->
* Manage 3D Settings ->
* Program Settings.
* Find the SD2 executable
* Then 2. Select High Performance NVIDIA Processor.

AMD:

This depends on the AMD chipset

* Right click your desktop
* Catalyst Control Center
* Graphics -> Powerplay
* Set to "Maximum Performance"

OR

1. Open up CCC (Mobility)
2. Go to "Power > Switchable Graphics Method"
3. Tick "Select the graphics processor manually or based on power source." and click "Apply"
4. A new option would (and should) appear under Power. This is "Power > Switchable Graphics" which was previously unavailable.
5. In here, there should be a two buttons under "Choose a Graphics Processing Unit:". Click on "High-performance GPU".
6. A confirmation should pop up asking if you want to confirm the change. Click on "Change". You may experience your screen flickering a bit. This is normal. Your computer is switching to the AMD GPU.

Reinstall vcredist

Try reinstalling vcredist from the StarDrive2 directory

Run Steam as an Administrator

Run Steam as an Administrator on your computer then relaunch the game

Screen Resolution Fixed or Looks Odd or Display Options are not Recognized

In Windows

Open regedit and go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\zero sum games\stardrive 2

You can either manually edit the resolution or delete the key and restart the game.

For Macs

Go to
~/Library/Preference

Look for a file called

unity.Zero Sum Games.StarDrive 2.plist

Delete this file, then restart the game.

Run in XP Compatibility Mode

Not a confirmed fix but it might help. Find the Stardrive2.exe and right click->Properties on it. Then go to the compatibility tab and run it in Windows XP mode.

No exe found

The game is 64-bit only. So if you try to run the game on a 32-bit system, the game will not load. Unfortunately the only fix is to reinstall your OS as a 64-bit one.

Refresh your local AppData

If youre stuck on the loading screen at 0%, 1%, etc, you are missing files in your AppData/LocalLow/Zero Sum Games/Stardrive 2/ folder. You need to copy all of the files under the steam folder for SD2/SD2_Data (steam/steamapps/common/Stardrive 2/SD2_Data/ to the Stadrive2 folder under AppData. You will see some of the folders match up between the two folders. The missing folders are the issue.

LINUX - Add Locale launch Parameter

If you're on Linux and are having launch issues:

Add this to advanced launch options in the settings for the game in steam (right click the name in the steam list and select settings)

LANG=en_US.UTF-8 %command%

http://steamcommunity.com/app/252450/discussions/0/611702631245372365/?tscn=1428941653#c611703709828517505

A patch was released but I'm still on the wrong version

Restart steam and it should then detect the new version

Custom Races Not Saving, Save Games Reverting to Old Ones,

There seems to be an issue with SteamCloud where it will overwrite any changes you make to yoru custom races or your save games potentially. If you're having this issue try disabling Steam Cloud.

* Go to your LIbrary in Steam
* Right click -> Properties on StarDrive2
* Go to the "UPDATES" tab
* Uncheck the very bottom "Enable Steam Cloud synchonization for StarDrive 2"

Note doing so will of course remove any convenience Steam Cloud offers. So choose wisely.

Opt into the Beta

There may be a beta branch available. This allows for rapid patch iteration for specific fixes, but not impacting the majority of users. If you have a particular problem that's being worked on, you might be asked to opt into the Beta branch

  • Go to your Library in Steam
  • Right click->Properties on StarDrive 2
  • Go to the BETAS tab
  • Select the pulldown under "Select the beta you would like to opt into"
  • Select the beta branch if one is available

After you click Ok it should download the latest beta branch. If not try restarting steam.

Note that beta branches are likely to be unstable. So just be mindful fo that.

Reporting Bugs

Not all bugs are created equal. In order to report bugs it's important to be as verbose as possible as to what you did. Do you see any error messages? Did you click on something? Is there a windows error box? All those kinds of information are really helpful.

It's also good to post your system information. An easy way to find this is to go into Steam and go to Steam->Help->System Information. A window will pop up with tons of information you can copy/paste.

But a good baseline of information is

Operating System : (windows 7/8.1, Mac OSX variants, Linux variants)
RAM : how much memory you have usually 4/6/8GB
CPU : Intel/AMD?
Video card: AMD/Nvidia/Intel

If you're not familiar with those things, you can get them from teh Steam-Help-System Information window

Also the debug log from Stardrive2 is helpful. You can find that in SD2/Data/output_log.txt.

While not being able to play the game is obviously frustrating, please be courteous when reporting bugs. Zer0 is definitely working on getting everyone playing the game.

Deprecated fixes. Stored here for archival purposes

The sounds/music is really loud

This is a known issue and will be addressed in the next patch

Try waiting?

There are some unconfirmed reports that if the game appears to 'hang' when you load it, by waiting 5 minutes it will finish. Not an ideal solution but if this does work it's a temporary work around.

Definitely send a bug report out 'waiting' solves your issue. It needs to be fixed.

Nice efforts Satoru. Pinned for visibility.

I am thinking there may be an issue with systems using shared memory video cards such as intell HD's and 4gb's of ram.
What may be happening is that the intel card is sucking up over a GB of ram for video which causes sd2 to be starved for memory.

there is a post here that talks about how to adjust this and what settings it should have.
http://www.pvladov.com/2013/10/increase-intel-hd-graphics-dedicated-video-memory.html

I believe lowering the max video ram for systems with 4GB's of ram might help.

Are Intel card even supported by SD2?

technically the minimum system specs say no.
technically you would need Intel HD Graphics 5600 to meet the min specs.
according to notebookcheck anyway and the min card on the system reqs being a gt460.

but the min specs are well above the safety margin and honestly pretty damn high.
Graphics: 1 GB nVidia Geforce GT460 or equivalent, 500 MB ATI HD4850 or equivalent
both of these are pretty decent cards. $150 bucks or so.

an intel hd card should be able play game if not very well.
we dont technically have to support it but i think we can try a little.

i have laptop with lousy old nvidia and it works. Waiting helped to unhang the game.
Troubles The Cat Apr 11, 2015 @ 10:45pm
I am having a weird problem atm where sometimes after a battle my fleet is now invisible on the map, I can use the box select to select them and move them, but they are ultimately invisible.

wow, free cloaking generator. does it work against enemies or just you? j/k
Chance Apr 12, 2015 @ 10:25am
not sure if this is the spot but i found a bug that has repeated itself

i captured a neutral race planet[kalatk] many turns later the opteris came in and invaded it, went to the ground battle but i was playing the opteris[the npc that invaded me] pretty sure that is not supposed to happen.

Thanks for your help but I cannot find the "appdata" folder. is it in steam?
Stuck at loading screen tried reinstall, verify game cache, now hunting the folder you mention.

On the plus side it is very nice art on the loading screen.

The AppData folder can be found here:
C:\Users\??????\AppData\LocalLow\Zero Sum Games\StarDrive 2

where ????? is your user name.

In some systems the AppData folder is hidden, to show hidden folders follow this guide:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/show-hidden-files#show-hidden-files=windows-7

Yeah no it doesn't actually make the ships invisible from a coding point of view :P just from a graphical point of view.
