Cheats or modding?
I've given the game its fair turn, and although gameplay is an improvement its nowhere near as customizable as SD1. I want to either cheat or edit at this point just to get crazy with it or start a legit game with the kind of settings I actually want. Can anyone give me advice or a tutorial on this? What I've found online has been less than helpful.

There is a Trainer available which you just run alongside the game and it alows you to do allsorts of things in game, its not a modding tool, just a nice easy to use cheat program (not attempting to degrade the authors work in anyway) - {LINK REMOVED}, All you need to do is make a simple account on the website, no pay or survery or ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like that, only needs an email and then download it, and run it. Et Voila

You can also just find your savegame's xml file in \Users\...\AppData\LocalLow\Zero Sum Games\StarDrive 2\SavedGames\ . Open it up in text editor and word search for your empire name. Then search for word money. Change it to what you want. I guess if you can buy everything in 1 turn the game becomes pretty sandbox.

cheathappens.com has a trainer that still works with the new patch. But you can just use cheat engine and find the value. Took me 3 turns to get the money value.

If you don't want to use a 3rd party cheats, for what you are looking for, you can just edit the XML file for the race you want to mod. Here's the one I made to build an ultimate race:

<TraitsList> <TraitType>atk2</TraitType> <TraitType>ground2</TraitType> <TraitType>HP2</TraitType> <TraitType>highg</TraitType> <TraitType>spy2</TraitType> <TraitType>env2</TraitType> <TraitType>richhw</TraitType> <TraitType>sub</TraitType> <TraitType>WorkIsLife</TraitType> <TraitType>Farm2</TraitType> <TraitType>slavers</TraitType> <TraitType>traders</TraitType> <TraitType>charismatic</TraitType> <TraitType>Res1</TraitType> <TraitType>cyber</TraitType> <TraitType>photo</TraitType> <TraitType>aquatic</TraitType> <TraitType>resourceful</TraitType> <TraitType>Money2</TraitType> <TraitType>Growth2</TraitType> <TraitType>Sacrifice</TraitType> <TraitType>HolyLand</TraitType> <TraitType>Spiritual</TraitType> <TraitType>Creative</TraitType> </TraitsList>

This should give you most of the teir 3 traits, and you can deselect any you don't want. Unfortunately, you can only deselect traits and not add new ones, though the traits are named fairly logically, so you can modify them directly in the xml file as well ("ground" is ground combat and the tiers are 0, 1, 2). Also, this gives you cyborg (called cyber) which means you have to build citizens rather than breed them, which you may or may not want.

To Use

Putting this in is easy and also easy to undo.

Open the file locations at C:\Users\[username]\AppData\LocalLow\Zero Sum Games\StarDrive 2\CustomRaces. Make a copy of the one you are going to edit and save it somewhere else. (If you edit the one in your steam folder, nothing will happen, but you can always use the ones there as a backup in case you want to undo it.)

In that folder, find the race file you want to edit (humans default, etc). If you've already made and saved a custom race, you can edit that one as well. Cut and paste everything in the traitslist above - make sure to overwrite the traits already there. If you have two traits in the same category, the game will crash.

You can use notepad/wordpad but make sure to resave as a .XML file, not as a .txt file. Alternatively you can download notepad++ (free) which is a bit easier.

To undo it, simply copy the backup you made back into this folder (overwriting the modified one) or copy the one from the steam folder.

One last side note: this does modify the entire race. So if you have the AI playing the same race as you, it'll have all the same benefits you do.
