shield decides to not work?

i know this game is old and sort of dead now but i really do want to enjoy it. i would, but for some reason the shield from my special sometimes decides to not work and i die the instant i touch an enemy even though i've *just* hit the button and even if it's an enemy i've shield bashed several times before in that same game without getting hurt. what gives?
