My review
It doesn't really live up to the original game for me, but it's still worth checking out and seeing for yourself if it's to your standards, or maybe you'll find something in it that I missed. There's enough to do in the game to appeal to people who are super into the TD genre, particularly the boss battles. The battlefields are all a treat to look at, too. Buy it and try it up to two hours, you can refund it at any point before then if it doesn't hook you by then. :azra: This game passed through a lot of different writers, musicians and developers hands to get to where it is now, it's at least worth a glance.

if it's not your cup of tea and you've never played the first one before, there's a demo you can play to see if appeals instead.

It would make for an interesting read if a journalist gave it a full write-up, though a tragic one given why some of the delays and changes happened.

You kind of already did that. I was going to half-joke that you could do a video review/retrospective with the ressearch and writing you've done on this. It certainly was interesting.
TL;DR: "The first one is better"

Sometimes it's better to be succinct.
tbh thats a ridiculous amount of writing for a sequel of a td game released a decade ago lol... like obsessive, autistic levels of writing

Fair, but I think there's merit in understanding why something feels good or feels bad beyond simple feelings. I don't like saying a movie was 'fun', or that it was 'boring', I like exploring what lead me to those conclusions.

Thank you for the indepth review. Maybe someday you can be a game analyzer or reviewer, be it in print or video. :)
Do we know why James Cavin left? The worldbuilding was one of my favorite parts of DQ1, so I'm a bit disappointed to see that it's not that great in the sequel.

It's honestly fascinating, in that I don't think I've seen something like this happen anywhere else in game development. It would make for an interesting read if a journalist gave it a full write-up, though a tragic one given why some of the delays and changes happened.

A bit Off-Topic what came to my mind reading this:
I once read "Blood, Sweat, and Pixels" from Jason Schreier.

You might like this one. ;)
I checked today to see if anything new was added to this thread and found out that the OP removed, without any explanations whatsoever, their original in-depth review that people valued so much (me included).

Here[archive.is] is their original, highly-detailed and informative piece for anyone interested.
DQ1 left such an impact on me that to this day whenever a game lets me play a "summoner" of any kind, I always name them Azra. :azra:

Played an entire Pathfinder campaign from level 1 to 18 with my Azra "I'm such a good healer I can raise the dead" (Oracle with the Curse of Bones, for those who know the system) - fond memories all around.

Really sad that DQ2 wasn't able to live up to the hype.

read the saved review in the screenshot and it sorta of angers me that they are missing the pre-order stuff and items you made and the extra battle with no justification as to why - your original review was fully justified and i felt a lot of the same - the game as it is now feels like a cash in on an unfinished game they spent $5 on to finish and ship to steam as they had al lthis pre-order money they needed to justify
So disappointing.
